Excerpt: Old Wave is an album by Ringo Starr, released in 1983 as the follow-up to 1981′s Stop and Smell the Roses. In early 1982, Starr was eager to move on to his next project. Deciding that he needed more consistency this time around, he would work with only one producer, Joe Walsh, a former member of the recently disbanded Eagles. Walsh and Starr had known each other since the mid-1970s, having met and befriended each other in Los Angeles. Walsh immediately agreed to work with Starr and they met in February to begin writing material. After John Lennon’s murder, Starr no longer felt safe in the US and returned home to England to live at Tittenhurst Park, which Starr purchased from Lennon in 1973. Having converted Lennon’s recording studio into Startling Studios, Starr would record his new album there. Beginning in March, Starr was joined not only by Walsh, but Gary Brooker (formerly of Procol Harum), The Who’s John Entwistle, Ray Cooper and Eric Clapton on one track. With none of his usual celebrity mates helping out, this was largely a Starr/Walsh album and the spotlight would be mostly on them. The album’s titling of Old Wave is a play on New Wave and an acknowledgment by Starr that an “old waver” like him is still up to the challenge. As an indication of his vitality, the cover of the album features a black and white photo of Starr in his pre-Beatles days. Recording of the album went smoothly and was completed by summer. As Starr’s RCA Records contract had been cancelled, he needed to find a new label for Old Wave. Thou… More:

Excerpt: Adrenalize – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia At the end of the Hysteria World Tour in October 1988, Def Leppard vowed to the press that their next album would not take another four years to be released, and quickly reconvened weeks later to start work. However, Steve Clark’s alcoholism was taking a turn for the worse. Whereas touring had kept him sober onstage, offstage his condition was beginning to affect his work in the studio. In addition, Mutt Lange was unavailable to return as producer as he was working with Canadian rocker Bryan Adams on Waking Up the Neighbours. The band chose to produce the album themselves. Steve’s problems did not help to advance progress and in fact, was starting to set them back. In late 1989, Clark would be found unconscious in a gutter in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was immediately sent to rehab, and band members (along with Lange) started attending confrontational therapy to attempt to shame him into defeating his addictions. In a desperate move to help their friend, guitar tech Malvin Mortimer (AKA Stumpus Maximus) would be assigned to keep a 24 hour watch on Clark, according to Joe Elliott, it was a difficult task. None of this would prove to be fruitful, and in August 1990 the band granted Clark a six-month leave of absence. While it was hoped that this break would free him of any stresses, the band seemed resigned to the fact that they could no longer do anything for Clark. On January 8, 1991, Steve Clark was found dead in his London home by his girlfriend Janie Dean. The coroner’s report revealed that Clark had died of an accidental mix of alcohol with painkillers and anti-depressants that led to compression of the brain stem. After a short period of uncertainty about the band’s future, the remaining memb… More:

The team played its home games at Horlick Field. In 1943, the Belles claimed the first Championship Title in the league’s history. This team was characterized by strong pitching, solid defense, timely hitting and speed on the bases. Racine won the first half with a 33-10 mark, and finished the regular season with an overall record of 55 wins and 38 losses. Mary Nesbitt led the pitching staff with a 26-13 record for a .667 winning percentage (fifth-best of the league), including 308 innings of work in 47 appearances. Slugger right fielder Eleanor Dapkus hit a league-lead 10 home runs, while Sophie Kurys stole a league-best 44 bases and scored 60 runs. Margaret Danhauser, Maddy English, Edythe Perlick and Claire Schillace could be counted on for their bats and solid defense. Born in Vienna, Buber came from a family of observant Jews, but broke with Jewish custom to pursue secular studies in philosophy. In 1902, Buber became the editor of the weekly Die Welt, the central organ of the Zionist movement, although he later withdrew from organizational work in Zionism. In 1923 Buber wrote his famous essay on existence, Ich und Du (later translated into English as I and Thou), and in 1925 he began translating the Hebrew Bible into the German language. In 1930 Buber became an honorary professor at the University of Frankfurt am Main, and resigned in protest from his professorship immediately after Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933. He then founded the Central Office for Jewish Adult Education, which became an increasingly important body as the German government forbade Jews to attend public education. In 1938, Buber left Germany and settled in Jerusalem, in the British Mandate for Palestine, receiving a professorship at Hebrew University and lecturing in anthropology and introductory sociology. Buber’s wife Paula died in 1958, and he died at his home in the Talbiyeh neighborhood of Jerusalem on June 13, 1965. Martin (Hebrew name: , Mordechai) Buber was born in Vienna to an Orthodox Jewish family. Excerpt: Tommy Emmanuel (born 31 May 1955 New South Wales) is an Australian guitarist, best known for his complex fingerpicking style, energetic performances and the use of percussive effects on the guitar. Tommy was born in the Upper Hunter in Muswellbrook, New South Wales, Australia. He received his first guitar in 1959 at the age of 4 – being taught by his mother to accompany her playing lap steel guitar. At the age of 7 he heard Chet Atkins on the radio. He vividly remembers this moment and says it greatly inspired him. By the age of 9, in 1964, he was a working professional musician. Recognizing the musical talents of Tommy and his brother Phil, their father created a family band, sold the family home and took his family on the road. With the family living in two station wagons, much of Emmanuels childhood was spent touring Australia with his family, playing rhythm guitar, and rarely going to school. The family found it difficult living on the road; they were poor and were often hungry, never settling in one place. His father would often drive ahead, organize interviews, advertising and finding the local music shop where they’d have an impromptu concert the next day. Eventually the New South Wales Department of Education insisted that the Emmanuel children needed to go to school regularly. After his father died in 1966, the family settled in Parkes. Tommy eventually moved to Sydney where he came to be noticed nationally when he won a string of talent contests in his teen years. By the late 1970s, he was playing drums with his brother Phil in the group Goldrush as well doing session work on numerous albums and jingles. He gained further prominence in the late 1970s as the lead guitarist in The Southern Star Band, the backing group for vocalist Do… More:

Excerpt: Mary Jane McLeod Bethune (July 10, 1875 May 18, 1955) was an American educator and civil rights leader best known for starting a school for black students in Daytona Beach, Florida that eventually became Bethune-Cookman University and for being an advisor to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Born in South Carolina to parents who had been slaves, and having to work in fields at age 5, she took an early interest in her own education. With the help of benefactors, Bethune attended college hoping to become a missionary in Africa. When that did not materialize, she started a school for black girls in Daytona Beach. From six students it grew and merged with an institute for black boys and eventually became the Bethune-Cookman School. Its quality far surpassed the standards of education for black students, and rivaled those of white schools. Bethune worked tirelessly to ensure funding for the school, and used it as a showcase for tourists and donors, to exhibit what educated black people could do. She was president of the college from 1923 to 1942 and 1946 to 1947, one of the few women in the world who served as a college president at that time. Bethune was also active in women’s clubs, and her leadership in them allowed her to become nationally prominent. She worked for the election of Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1932, and became a member of Roosevelt’s Black Cabinet, sharing the concerns of black people with the Roosevelt administration while spreading Roosevelt’s message to blacks, who had been traditionally Republican voters. Upon her death, columnist Louis E. Martin said, “She gave out faith and hope as if they were pills and she some sort of doctor.” Her home in Daytona Beach is a National Historic Landmark, her house in Washington, D.C. in Logan… More:

Excerpt: Ernest Hemingway House – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Ernest Hemingway with sons and kittens at Finca Vigia, Cuba 1946 (JFK Library). The photo confirms son Patrick’s memory of Hemingway’s cats in Cuba (no obvious polydactyl cats are seen in this photo). An absence of cats in Key West at the time would be more difficult to prove. This was Hemingway’s home from 1931 to 1939. It is a private, for-profit landmark and tourist attraction now populated by six and seven-toed cats that guides claim are descendants of Hemingway’s cats. The author’s second son, Patrick, who lived in the house, stated in a 1994 interview in the Miami Herald’s “Tropic” that his father had peacocks in Key West, but no cats; he owned cats in Cuba. In a 1972 L.A. Times interview, Hemingway’s widow Mary denounced the sale of “Hemingway cats” by the owners of the house as “An outright lie. Rank exploitation of Ernest’s name.” The house no longer sells cats, but does continue a selective breeding program for them. It was in this house that he did some of his best work, including the final draft to “A Farewell to Arms,” and the short story classics “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” and “The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber.” The house stands at an elevation of 16 feet above sea level, but is still the second-highest site on the island. It was originally built by Asa Tift, a marine architect and salvage wrecker, in 1851 in colonial southern mansion style, out of limestone quarried from the site. As testament to its construction and location, it survived many hurricanes, and the deep basement remained, and remains, dry. The Hemingways had lived in Key West since 1930, but had rented housing. Pauline Hemingway (the writer’s second wife) found the Tift house in 1931, for sale at a… More:

Excerpt: The Museum of Bad Art (MOBA) is a privately owned museum whose stated aim is “to celebrate the labor of artists whose work would be displayed and appreciated in no other forum”. It has two branches, one in Dedham, Massachusetts, and the other in nearby Somerville. Its permanent collection includes 500 pieces of “art too bad to be ignored”, 25 to 35 of which are on public display at any one time. MOBA was founded in 1994, after antique dealer Scott Wilson showed a painting he had recovered from the trash to some friends, who suggested starting a collection. Within a year, receptions held in Wilson’s friends’ home were so well-attended that the collection required its own viewing space. The museum moved to the basement of a theater in Dedham. Explaining the reasoning behind the museum’s establishment, co-founder Jerry Reilly said in 1995: “While every city in the world has at least one museum dedicated to the best of art, MOBA is the only museum dedicated to collecting and exhibiting the worst.” To be included in MOBA’s collection, works must be original and have serious intent, but they must also have significant flaws without being boring; curators are not interested in displaying art that is deliberately kitsch. MOBA has been mentioned in dozens of off-the-beaten-path guides to Boston, featured in international newspapers and magazines, and has inspired several other collections throughout the world that set out to rival its own visual atrocities. Deborah Solomon of The New York Times Magazine noted that the attention the Museum of Bad Art receives is part of a wider trend of museums displaying “the best bad art”. The museum has been criticized for being anti-art, but the founders deny this, responding that its collection is a tribute to … More:

Excerpt: Albert Edward Horsley (18671954), best known by the pseudonym Harry Orchard, was a miner convicted of the 1905 political assassination of former Idaho Governor Frank Steunenberg. The case was one of the most sensational and widely-reported of the first decade of the 20th Century, involving three prominent leaders of the radical Western Federation of Miners as co-defendants in an alleged conspiracy to commit murder. Albert Edward Horsley was born March 18, 1866 in Wooler, Ontario, Canada, the son of English and Irish parentage. One of eight children in a poor farm family, Albert was only able to attend formal school through the third grade, helping to support the family by working as soon as he was able. Albert worked as a farmhand for neighbors, either on a daily or monthly basis, with his parents receiving the income from his work until Albert was 20. At the age of 22, Horsley left home to work as a logger in Saginaw, Michigan. He returned to Canada and was married about 1889. The Horsleys spent some time as cheesemakers, both independently and in the employ of others. His wife gave birth to a daughter, removing her from their cheese factory, while Albert later recalled that he “lived away beyond my means, and was some in debt, and my credit was not so good.” Seeking to run away with another woman, Horsley burned his cheese factory and collected the insurance money, thereby settling his debts. Horsley abandoned his family and, together with his girlfriend, headed west to Pilot Bay, about 20 miles out of Nelson, British Columbia. The pair… More:

Excerpt: The biopsychosocial model (abbreviated “BPS”) is a general model or approach that posits that biological , psychological (which entails thoughts, emotions, and behaviors), and social factors, all play a significant role in human functioning in the context of disease or illness. Indeed, health is best understood in terms of a combination of biological, psychological, and social factors rather than purely in biological terms . This is in contrast to the traditional, reductionist biomedical model of medicine that suggests every disease process can be explained in terms of an underlying deviation from normal function such as a pathogen , genetic or developmental abnormality , or injury. The concept is used in fields such as medicine , nursing , health psychology and sociology , and particularly in more specialist fields such as psychiatry , health psychology , chiropractic , clinical social work , and clinical psychology . The biopsychosocial paradigm is also a technical term for the popular concept of the mind body connection, which addresses more philosophical arguments between the biopsychosocial and biomedical models, rather than their empirical exploration and clinical application. The model was theorized by psychiatrist George L. Engel at the University of Rochester , and putatively discussed in a 1977 article in Science , where he posited “the need for a new medical model”; however no single definitive, irreducible model has been

Andrija Jr. obtained his elementary education in his home town, continued his study in the gymnasium of a neighboring town, Rijeka, and received his higher education in mathematics and physics at the Faculty of Philosophy in Prague in 1875. There, one of his professors was the famous physicist Ernst Mach. At the age of 15 the junior Mohorovii knew Italian, English and French and later he learned German, Latin and Ancient Greek. His career began with a teaching post in the Zagreb gymnasium (1879 -1880) and then secondary school in Osijek. In 1882, he began to teach at the Royal Nautical School in Bakar, near Rijeka, where he remained for nine years. Works initiated or done there were crucial for the beginning of Mohorovii’s scientific work. From 1893, when he became a corresponding member, to 1917-18 he taught subjects in the fields of geophysics and astronomy at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Zagreb. In 1898 he became a full member of what was then the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts in Zagreb where he was private docent, and… More:

Excerpt: Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, 18th Baron of Dunsany (24 July 1878 25 October 1957) was an Anglo-Irish writer and dramatist, notable for his work, mostly in fantasy, published under the name Lord Dunsany. More than eighty books of his work were published, and his oeuvre includes many hundreds of published short stories, as well as successful plays, novels and essays. Born to one of the oldest titles in the Irish peerage, Dunsany lived much of his life at perhaps Ireland’s longest-inhabited home, Dunsany Castle near Tara, worked with W.B. Yeats and Lady Gregory, received an honorary doctorate from Trinity College, was chess and pistol-shooting champion of Ireland, and travelled and hunted extensively. He died in Dublin after an attack of appendicitis. Edward Plunkett (Dunsany) was the first son of John William Plunkett, 17th Baron of Dunsany (18531899) and his wife, Ernle Elizabeth Louisa Maria Grosvenor Ernle-Erle-Drax, née Ernle Elizabeth Louisa Jessica Burton (18551916). From an historically wealthy and famous family, Dunsany was related to many other well-known Irish figures. He was a kinsman of the Catholic Saint Oliver Plunkett, the martyred Archbishop of Armagh. His mother was a cousin of Sir Richard Burton, and he inherited from her considerable height, being 6′ 4″. The Countess of Fingall, wife of Dunsany’s cousin, the Earl of Fingall, wrote a best-selling account of the life of the aristocracy in Ireland in the late 19th century and early 20th century, called Seventy Years Young. Plunkett’s only sibling, a younger brother, from whom he was later estranged, was the noted British naval officer, Admiral The Honourable Sir Reginald Aylmer Ranfurly Plunkett-Ernle-Erle-Drax. Edward Plunkett grew up at the family properties, most notably… More:

After struggling for many years, the Steelers came to dominate regional high school football for roughly a 15 year period, peaking in 1987 when it was ranked the best in the nation. Excerpt: Vivian Stanshall (born Victor Anthony Stanshall; 21 March 1943 5 March 1995) was an English singer-songwriter, painter, musician, author, poet and wit, best known for his work with the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, for his surreal exploration of the British upper classes in Sir Henry at Rawlinson End, and for narrating Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells. Stanshall was often called a “great British eccentric”, but this was a label he hated: it suggested that he was putting on an act. Instead, as he himself always insisted, “…he was merely being himself.” However, it is not difficult to understand why he received the label. Neil Innes said of their first meeting: “He was quite plump in those days. He had on Billy Bunter check trousers, a Victorian frock coat, violet pince-nez glasses, and carried a euphonium. He also wore large pink rubber ears.” Stanshall was born on 21 March 1943 at the Radcliffe Maternity Home in Shillingford, and christened Victor Anthony Stanshall. (The name and the date are certainly correct but there is much speculation about the place, with his mother herself stating Shillingford, Oxfordshire and his father claiming Walthamstow. Vivian himself said he was “evacuated from the war from the east end” but failed to say when.) Stanshall certainly spent some time in Walthamstow a suburb on the borders of East London and Essex (which hints he was born there) but at some point his mother Eileen (19111999) moved to Shillingford, Oxfordshire, along with thousands of others, to escape the bombing during the Second World War. There she lived with her young son while her husband, Victor (19091990) (a name he had adopted in preference to his own christened name of Vivian), served in the RAF. If Eileen was happy in Shillingford, Vivian was hap… More:

The novel had an initial print run of 1.5 million copies and reached the #1 bestseller position at Amazon.com and #2 on the New York Times Best Seller list for one week in January 2005. The book contains many graphs and footnotes, two appendices, and a twenty page bibliography, which have given many people the impression that the book has scientific authority, but a majority of climate scientists dispute Crichton’s science as being error-filled and distorted. State of Fear is, like many of Crichton’s works, a fictional work that uses science and speculation for the storyline. The debate over global warming serves as the backdrop for the book. Crichton supplies a personal afterword and two appendices that link the fictional part of the book with real examples of his thesis. The main villains in the plot are

Produced by Ivan Reitman and distributed by Paramount Pictures, the film is adapted from the 1993 best-selling autobiography of the same name by radio personality Howard Stern. It follows his life from boyhood to the cusp of break-out success in radio as a “shock jock.” The film stars Stern and members of staff on his radio show as themselves, including sidekicks Robin Quivers and Fred Norris, producer Gary Dell’Abate and comedian Jackie Martling. Following an appearance at the 1992 MTV Music Video Awards (as alter-ego “Fartman”) Stern boards a flight to go home and finds himself seated next to an attractive woman visibly repulsed by him. In order to win her over, he begins to tell her his life story using his “radio persona” for a wedge. Howard begins with his childhood, explaining that his father (Richard Portnow) would continuously verbally abuse him, but would take Howard to work at WHOM, a radio station in New York City. Since then Howard dreamed of being on the radio. Time passed and he grew up as a quiet, socially awkward teen who in his own words was “hung like a three-year-old,” so he started smoking marijuana. When confronted by his parents about what he wants to do with his future, he tells them he wants to be on the radio, at first his parents try to make him reconsider his decision but eventually give him their approval. In his senior year at college, Howard gets the job of being the disc jockey for the WTBU, the college radio station, where he fails at keeping the show together. Norshteyn has said that he considers The Overcoat to be as important a work of literature for him personally as one of the chapters of the Bible. By 1981, when work on the film began, Norshteyn had been working at Soyuzmultfilm (the main Soviet animation studio) for 13 years and had worked on some 40 films and directed or co-directed six. Progress was slow, with many interruptions (Norshteyn estimates that only about three years of work were actually done). Norshteyn says that Viktor Tinyaev ( ) helped him during this period. In 1986, with only 10 minutes of the film completed, Norshteyn was fired from the Soyuzmultfilm studio in which he had worked. This was despite the fact that his films had gathered many international awards, and Tale of Tales had been voted the best animated film of all time by a large panel of international critics in 1984. With the help of Rolan Bykov, Norshteyn managed to set up his own animation studio in his home. There, he and his team continued to slowly work on the film. Funding has been sporadic and has come from many different sources, including the Savings Bank of Russia (Sberbank) and TNK oil company. A few minutes were shot under the Soros Fund before 1999. Norshteyn has been known for refusing funding from certain sources. He refused to accept money from Mikhail Shvydkoy, the Russian Minister of Cul… More:

Excerpt: The Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, 30 acres (120,000 m), is a botanical garden located at 1800 Lakeside Avenue, on the North Side of Richmond, Virginia. The property was once owned by Patrick Henry. The Gardens three-fold mission is (1) to provide education to the community about the plant world, (2) promote the best in horticulture and landscape design and (3) work toward the goal of being a leader in botanical and applied horticultural research. The gently rolling terrain that is the site of Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden was once the hunting ground of Powhatan Indians. Known to the Powhatan as Oughnum this name underwent a number of modifications beginning in 1690, when Nathaniel Bacon, president of the Council of Virginia, granted James Moore of New Kent County a patent for 573 acres (2.32 km) on Uffnum Brook. A prominent Quaker name John Pleasants was the new owner, followed by Thomas Williamson, who purchased the tract for less than 50 pounds in 1716; over the next 89 years ownership of the land remained, for the most part, in the Williamson family. Violence erupted n 1781 when Samuel Williamsons home was pillaged by General Benedict Arnolds Revolutionary War raid on Richmond. A dwelling, Oak Cottage, was built during this time, and a portion of the Williamson land along with this cottage was purchased by Virginia … More:

Excerpt: Angel De Cora Dietz was a Winnebago painter, illustrator, Native American rights advocate, and teacher at Carlisle Indian School . She was the best known Native American artist before World War I . Background Angel De Cora Dietz (1871-1919), or Hinook-Mahiwi-Kalinaka (Fleecy Cloud Floating in Place), was born at the Winnebago Agency in Dakota County (now Thurston), Nebraska, on May 3, the daughter of David Tall Decora, a Winnebago of French ancestry. Her mother was a member of the influential LaMere family. Career Angel was played an important role in the turn-of-the-century, since she exhibited her art to both Native and non-Native audiences. She understanding being Indian, had personally experienced historical trauma of being assimilated and had witnessing genocide. Her understood ancestral historical trauma through the tearing apart of Winnebago families, culture, and land. Still she maintained a strong resilience in life to overcome and flourish. She successfully adapted to the Euro-American culture. Artwork In her art work, Angel De Cora painted firelight to illuminate warm memories of her childhood life on the Nebraska plains after she settled far from home in the east”. Her oil Painting, “for an Indian school exhibit, for the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York” demonstrates the technical prowess and emotional depth of her art. Excerpt: This article contains character information for the American television sitcom Home Improvement. Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor (played by Tim Allen) Tim Taylor (the character has a birth date of October 1954) is the father of the family. Ever the know-it-all, Tim believes he has an incredibly wide knowledge of tools, electronics and general mechanics. In reality, he is highly accident-prone. He actually does have a significant amount of skill as a general handyman, but can be overly confident and accident prone. He often forgets a crucial step, ignores instructions, makes ill-advised modifications, or comes to inaccurate conclusions. The only exception to this ineptitude is when working on cars, at which he excels. He is left-handed but actually does a great deal of his work with his right hand. Taylor’s “arch enemy”, so to speak, was the real-life home improvement specialist, Bob Vila. Tim hosts a home improvement show called “Tool Time” with his best friend, Al Borland. While Al is his co-host, Al constantly must remind Tim of safety regulations and practices. Tim often ignores Al’s advice, and this frequently results in an accident. While it is constantly mentioned that Tool Time is a limited local home improvement show that sits very high on the channel dial, Tool Time seems to have a very wide audience in the state of Michigan, and is progressively broadcast to more outlets across the Midwest (A Season 5 episode has Tim, Al and Bud brainstorming for ideas on how to bring the show into the Chicago markets). Tim often boasts at his popularity for hosting the show, although many people state that they like Al better. In later seasons it is learned that Tim actually has a higher fan base than Al. Because of the numerous accidents he is involve… More:

Chapters: Ernest Hemingway House, Harry S. Truman Little White House, Richard Peacon House, Audubon House and Tropical Gardens, Key West Heritage House Museum and Robert Frost Cottage, Eduardo H. Gato House, Dr. Joseph Y. Porter House, Southernmost House. Excerpt: Michael Curtiz (December 24, 1886 – April 10, 1962) was a Hungarian-American filmmaker (with early credits as Mihály Kertész and Michael Kertész). He directed more than fifty films in Europe and more than one hundred in the United States. The best-known were The Adventures of Robin Hood, Angels with Dirty Faces, Casablanca, Yankee Doodle Dandy, and White Christmas. He thrived in the heyday of the Warner Bros. studio in the 1930s and ’40s. He was less successful from the late 1940s onwards, when he attempted to move from studio direction into production and freelance work, but he continued working until shortly before his death. Curtiz was born Manó Kertész Kaminer to a Jewish family in Budapest, Hungary (then Austria-Hungary). He claimed to have been born December 24, 1886. Both the date and the year are open to doubt: he was fond of telling tall stories about his early years, including that he had run away from home to join the circus and that he had been a member of the Hungarian fencing team at the 1912 Olympic Games, but he seems to have had a conventional middle-class upbringing. He studied at Markoszy University and the Royal Academy of Theater and Art, Budapest, before beginning his career as an actor and director as Mihály Kertész at the National Hungarian Theater in 1912. Details of his early experience as a director are sparse, and it is not clear what part he may have played in the direction of several early films, but he is known to have directed at least one film in Hungary before spending six months in 1913 at the Nordisk studio in Denmark honing his craft. While in Denmark, Curtiz worked as the assistant director for August Blom on Denmark’s first multi-reel feature film, Atlantis. On the outbreak of World

His stand-up has won two awards at the Edinburgh Fringe, Best Newcomer first of all and the if.comedy award in 2008 for his show Let’s Comedy. He has been nominated twice more for his work at the festival. O’Doherty has also written a children’s book, composed two plays and released two comedy CDs, the first of which Giggle Me Timbers (Jokes Ahoy) was recorded at his home in front of 35 people. O’Doherty’s second more recent CD release called Let’s David O’Doherty was recorded in Whelans of Dublin and released in December 2009. His television series The Modest Adventures of David O’Doherty was broadcast on RTÉ Television in 2007. In 2006 he claimed that it took him “about three years to get a decent hour together and seven years to achieve this level of fame where (he is) the number three ranked person called David ODoherty on Google”. His nephew, Conor, consistently beats him at pitch and putt. O’Doherty is well-known for combining his comedic performance with tunes played on his miniature electronic keyboard. O’Doherty describes his own style of comedy in his song “FAQ for the DOD” as “very low energy musical whimsy” – or “VLEMWy,” for short. This is an accurate summary as he delivers both his sung and spoken jokes with an extremely dry sarcasm. Most of his songs focus on unusual topics such as angry mathematicians, finding love (Orange) and advice on how to dislodge a badger from one’s leg. O’Doherty worked in telemarketing and temping before he made his first stage appearance at Dublin’s Comedy Cellar in 1998. His first full show was The Story of the Boy Who Saved Comedy which received a nomination f… More:

His grandfather, Solomon Buber, in whose house in Lemberg (now Lviv, Ukraine) Buber spent much of his childhood, was a renowned scholar of Midrash and Rabbinic Literature. Soichiro was born in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, Japan. Honda spent his early childhood helping his father, Gihei, a blacksmith, with his bicycle repair business. At the time his mother, Mika, was a weaver. At 15, without any formal education, Honda left home and headed to Tokyo to look for work. He obtained an apprenticeship at a garage in 1922, and after some vacillation over his employment, he stayed for six years, working as a car mechanic before returning home to start his own auto repair business in 1928 at the age of 22. In 1937 Honda began producing piston rings for small engines which lead to manufacturing small engines to be used in motorcycles, and then in 1948 he started producing complete motorcycles as president of the Honda Motor Company. Honda turned the company into a billion-dollar multinational that produced the best-selling motorcycles in the world. Honda’s excellent engineering and clever marketing resulted in Honda motorcycles out-selling Triumph and Harley-Davidson in their respective home markets. In 1959 Honda Motorcycles opened its first dealership in the United States. Honda remained president until his retirement in 1973, stayed on as director, and was appointed “supreme adviser” in 1983. His legendary status was such that People magazine placed him on their “25 Most Intriguing People of the Year” list for 1980, dubbing him “the Japanese Henry Ford.” In retirement Honda busied himself with work connected with the Honda Foundation. He died in 1991 from … More:

Paul Westerberg (born December 31, 1959) is an American musician, best known as the former lead singer, rhythm guitarist, and songwriter of The Replacements, one of the seminal alternative rock bands of the 1980s. He launched a solo career after the dissolution of that band. In recent years, he has cultivated a more independent-minded approach, primarily recording his music at home in his basement. According to Replacements lore, Westerberg was working as a janitor, and while walking home from work one day, he happened to hear a punk band practicing in a basement. He talked his way into the band by convincing the singer that the other band members–Bob Stinson, Chris Mars and Tommy Stinson–were going to fire him. The singer quit and Westerberg joined the group. The band was originally called “The Impediments,” but they changed their name to “The Replacements” after several venues declined to advertise the band under their original name.

Excerpt: James Fenimore Cooper (September 15, 1789 September 14, 1851) was a prolific and popular American writer of the early 19th century. He is best remembered as a novelist who wrote numerous sea-stories and the historical novels known as the Leatherstocking Tales, featuring frontiersman Natty Bumppo. Among his most famous works is the Romantic novel The Last of the Mohicans, often regarded as his masterpiece. Jameson Fenimore Cooper was born in Burlington, New Jersey, the son of William and Elizabeth (Fenimore) Cooper. His father was a United States Congressman. Shortly after his first birthday, his family moved to Cooperstown, New York, a community founded by his father. At 13, Cooper was enrolled at Yale, but he did not obtain a degree due to being expelled for childish pranks. He obtained work as a sailor on a merchant vessel, and at 18, joined the United States Navy. He obtained the rank of midshipman before leaving in 1811. At age 21, he married Susan DeLancey. They had seven children, five of whom lived to adulthood. The writer Paul Fenimore Cooper was a great-grandson. He anonymously published his first book, Precaution (1820). He soon issued several others. In 1823, he published The Pioneers; this was the first of the Leatherstocking series, featuring Natty Bumppo, the resourceful American woodsman at home with the Delaware Indians and especially their chief Chingachgook. Cooper’s most famous novel, Last of the Mohicans (1826), became one of the most widely read American novels of the nineteenth century. The book was written in New York City, where Cooper and his family lived from 1822 to 1826. In 1826 Cooper moved his family to Europe, where he sought to gain more income from his books as well as provide better education for his children… More:

Excerpt: Patrick O’Brian, CBE (12 December 1914 2 January 2000), born Richard Patrick Russ, was an English novelist and translator, best known for his AubreyMaturin series of novels set in the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars and centred on the friendship of English Naval Captain Jack Aubrey and the IrishCatalan physician Stephen Maturin. The 20-novel series is known for its well-researched and highly detailed portrayal of early 19th century life, as well as its authentic and evocative language. A partially-finished twenty-first novel in the series was published posthumously containing facing pages of handwriting and typescript. O’Brian was born Richard Patrick Russ, in Chalfont St. Peter, Buckinghamshire and was the son of a physician of German descent and an English mother of Irish descent. The eighth of nine children, he lost his mother at the age of three, and his biographers describe a fairly isolated childhood, with sporadic schooling and long intervals at home with his father and stepmother, during which time his literary career began (see below). In 1934 he underwent a brief period of pilot training with the Royal Air Force but this was not successful, and by 1935 he was living in London, where he married his first wife, Elizabeth, in 1936. They had two children; the second, a daughter, suffered from spina bifida and died in 1942 aged three, by which time Patrick had left the family in their remote country cottage and returned to London, where he worked throughout the war. Saltzman was born in Sherbrooke, Quebec, but ran away from home at the age of 15, according to daughter Hilary Saltzman in the Ian Fleming Foundation documentary Harry Saltzman: Showman. About the age of 17 he joined a circus and traveled with them for some years. By the beginning of World War II in 1939 he was serving in the Canadian Army in France. His career in the war may have included some intelligence work . After the war, Saltzman ended up in Paris, where he met a refugee from Romania whom he married, Jaquie. He worked as a talent scout for European productions on stage, television and in film. He accumulated a huge number of entertainment business contacts and became the person to turn to when someone had a talent or production problem. Despite his ambition, those were lean years for the Saltzman family, according to son Steven. Saltzman gradually got more successful at producing stage plays. He moved the family of four to Britain in the mid-fifties where he started Woodfall Productions, again produced theater, and then entered the film business, producing The Iron Petticoat (1956), the cinematic adaptation of a play. “The landmark film introduces a new genre, the kitchen sink movie”, and thereafter other critically acclaimed social realism dramas such as 1959′s Look Back in Anger and 1960′s Saturday Night and Sunday Morning. Excerpt: Martin Buber (Hebrew: ; February 8, 1878, Franz-Josefs-Kai 45, Innere Stadt June 13, 1965) was an Austrian-born Jewish philosopher best known for his philosophy of dialogue, a form of religious existentialism centered on the distinction between the I-Thou relationship and the I-It relationship. His grandfather, Solomon Buber, in whose house in Lemberg (now Lviv, Ukraine) Buber spent much of his childhood, was a renowned scholar of Midrash and Rabbinic Literature. At home Buber spoke Yiddish and German. In 1892, Buber returned t… More:

Banks was a member of the England national team that won the 1966 World Cup. Banks was named by Pelé as one of the top 125 greatest living footballers in March 2004. His consistent performances in goal led to the re-wording of a common English idiom used in everyday speech to “Safe as the Banks of England.” Banks, born in Sheffield was a careful student of goalkeepers during childhood. Banks played in local colliery football as a boy and was offered an apprenticeship by Chesterfield after initially going to work as a coal bagger and then as a bricklayer on leaving school. After performances in the youth and A teams gained him promotion to the reserves, Banks was posted to Germany with the Royal Signals on National service, winning the Rhine Cup with his regimental team. On his return he was offered a full-time contract by the Chesterfield manager, Teddy Davison. He reached the two-legged final of the FA Youth Cup with Chesterfield in 1956, losing 43 on aggregate to the Manchester United team of the famous Busby Babes. He made his debut for the first team at home in November 1958 against Colchester United in the newly formed Third Division. He played just 23 games for the club before First Division Leicester City offered Chesterfield £7,000 in the summer of 1959. Banks’ career started to rise rapidly from this point. After four games for the reserves, he replaced the injured Dave McLaren for his Leicester City debut in a 1-1 draw against Blackpool on 9 September 1959 and retained his place for the 2-0 defeat against Newcastle 3 days later. Excerpt: Emma, Lady Hamilton (26 April 1761; baptised 12 May 1765 15 January 1815) is best remembered as the mistress of Lord Nelson and as the muse of George Romney. She was born Amy Lyon in Ness near Neston, Cheshire, England, the daughter of a blacksmith, Henry Lyon, who died when she was two months old. She was brought up by her mother, formerly Mary Kidd, at Hawarden, with no formal education. She later changed her name to Emma Hart. Details of Emma’s early life are unclear, but at age 12, she was known to be working as a maid at the Hawarden home of Doctor Honoratus Leigh Thomas, a surgeon working in Chester. Then she worked for the Budd family in Chatham Place, Blackfriars, and met a maid called Jane Powell, who wanted to be an actress. Emma joined in with Jane’s rehearsals for various tragic roles. After this short stay in London, Emma went back to her mother, who was living near Oxford Street. Inspired by Jane’s enthusiasm for the theatre, Emma started work at the Drury Lane theatre in Covent Garden, as maid to various actresses, among them Mary Robinson. However, this paid little. Emma next worked as a model and dancer at the “Goddess of Health” (also known as the “Temple of Health”) for James Graham, a Scottish “quack” doctor. The establishment’s greatest attraction was a bed through which electricity was passed, giving paying patrons mild shocks. This supposedly aided conception, and many infertile couples paid high prices to try it. Still only fifteen years old, Emma met Sir Harry Featherstonhaugh who hired her for several months as hostess and entertainer at a lengthy stag party at Sir Harry’s Uppark country estate in the South Downs. She is said to have entertained Harry and his friends by dancing naked on the dining room table. Sir Har… More:

Excerpt: Dorothy Leigh Sayers (usually pronounced , although Sayers herself preferred and encouraged the use of her middle initial to facilitate this pronunciation) (Oxford, 13 June 1893 Witham, 17 December 1957) was a renowned English crime writer, poet, playwright, essayist, translator and Christian humanist. She was also a student of classical and modern languages. She is best known for her mysteries, a series of novels and short stories set between World War I and World War II that feature English aristocrat and amateur sleuth Lord Peter Wimsey. However, Sayers herself considered her translation of Dante’s Divina Commedia to be her best work. She is also known for her plays and essays. Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, where Sayers’ father was headmaster of the Choir SchoolSayers, an only child, was born on 13 June 1893 at the Head Master’s House, Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, where her father, the Rev. Henry Sayers, M.A., was chaplain of Christ Church and headmaster of the Choir School. (When she was six he started teaching her Latin.) She grew up in the tiny village of Bluntisham-cum-Earith after her father was given the living there as rector. The elegance of the Regency rectory she called home is worthy of her description of Duke’s Denver, Lord Wimsey’s family seat, while the church graveyard features the surnames of several characters from her mystery The Nine Tailors. The proximity of the River Great Ouse and the Fens explains the book’s vivid description of a massive flood around the village. From 1909 she was educated at the Godolphin School, a boarding school in Salisbury. Her father later moved to the less luxurious living of Christchurch, also in Cambridgeshire. In 1912, she won a scholarship to Somerville College, Oxford, and studi… More:
