A Photographic History $36.03 Conceived and designed by Peter Campbell working in conjunction with top advertising photographer Ron Bambridge and the Brooklands Museum, this profusely illustrated book celebrates the centenary of the world’s first custom-built motor racing circuit and home of British aviation. In the pioneering days of driving, competitive racing was banned on public roads in the United Kingdom. British automobile manufacturers could only watch as their European counterparts such as Fiat, Renault, and Peugeot gained valuable publicity from city-to-city races held around the continent, despite the inherent dangers. To create a base for UK motor sport, Hugh Fortescue Locke-King designed a circuit where cars could race in comparative safety. In 1906 he set to work to build a huge concrete banked oval bowl, 100 feet wide and more than two miles long, on land he owned in Surrey. This formidable engineering project was completed within 18 months and in 1907, Brooklands held its first race. It remained in constant use until 1939 and the cars and drivers who competed there have passed into legend. Huge, powerful cars from companies such as Duesenberg, Railton, Lorraine-Dietrich, and Bentley, and smaller cars from MG and Morgan, all took part in long distance races and record breaking. Pioneer drivers such as Malcolm Campbell, Raymond Mays, and J. G. Parry-Thomas competed against fearless lady racers like Doreen Evans and Kay Petrie. It was John Cobb at the wheel of his mighty Napier Railton that established the ultimate circuit record of 143.33mph. The reputation of many motorcycle companies like Norton, Ariel, Zenith, and Douglas were established due to their exploits at Brooklands. Within the groundsof the concrete circuit, hangars were built alongside a small runway. From these buildings pioneer aviators Alliott Verdon-Roe, Tommy Sopwith, and Harry Hawker founded the British aviation industry. 9th Ward Pickin’ Parlor $17.98 Not surprisingly, Shawn Mullins’ association with Sony didn’t last long. His sophomore release for the label never found its intended audience, and with eclectic singer/songwriters not exactly in vogue in 2005, he found a more comfortable and logical home at Vanguard. Here was a company that thrived on, and had successful experience with, promoting other artists with idiosyncratic folk and folk-rock styles similar to Mullins. The feeling was mutual, since Mullins delivers a gem of an album with 9th Ward Pickin’ Parlor. With acoustic tracks recorded at the titular New Orleans studio, pre-Hurricane Katrina, Mullins has crafted a diverse offering that encompasses folk, rock, Celtic, and country, often interlocking in the same tune. He aims for early Black Crowes territory on the gospel-laced “Faith,” and gives a personal spin to a self-penned murder ballad “Cold Black Heart,” which is dominated by his work on charango, an Andean mandolin. The mandolin also plays a prominent role in “Homemade Wine,” a moody story-song ballad about leaving town that takes advantage of Mullins’ deep, expressive voice. “All Fall Down” finds its rocking heart in the Beatles’ “I Want You,” especially as it builds in intensity with circular chords that accentuate the melody. The disc’s first single, the harder-edged “Beautiful Wreck,” is also better than anything on the short-lived Thorns’ project, a band in which Mullins shared the stage with Matthew Sweet and Pete Droge (Droge helped co-write the track). Mullins goes traditional religious on the waltz-timed “Lay Down Your Swords, Boys,” which culminates in full Salvation-Army-band mode with backing vocals. It was a single-engine biplane flying boat purchased to meet a Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) demand for a smaller aircraft than the Vickers Viking with a much greater rate of climb, to be suitable for forestry survey and fire protection work. The type went on to have a long and distinguished career in civil operations in Canada. Most of the topographical maps in use in Canada today are based on photos taken from one of these aircraft. Based on a preliminary design in early 1924 for a “flying boat” by R. K. Pierson of the home company, Vickers (UK), the Canadian Vickers Vedette was a two/three-seat single-engine pusher aircraft. The design was passed over to the Canadian Vickers Limited of Longueuil, Quebec (formed in 1911) where Wilfrid Thomas Reid served as Chief Engineer. The prototype Vedette I was first flown on 4 November 1924, powered by a 200 hp Rolls-Royce Falcon III. It was subsequently fitted with 210 hp Wolseley Viper, 200 hp Wright J-4 and 215 hp Armstrong Siddeley Lynx engines for testing.
