Excerpt: Liverpool City Council v Irwin UKHL 1 is a leading English contract law case, concerning the basis on which courts may imply terms into contracts. There was a fifteen storey tower block known as the Piggeries in Everton, Liverpool. It had seventy units, a stairwell, two lifts, and a rubbish chute. Mr and Mrs Irwin were tenants from July 1966. The common parts were vandalised, the lifts did not work, the stair lights failed, the chute was blocked, lavatory cisterns blocked and overflowed. The tenants refused to pay rent. In an action by the council to eject them, they counterclaimed that the council was in breach of a duty to keep the common parts of the estates in decent repair. Lord Denning MR dissented from Roskill LJ and Ormrod LJ and argued that a contractual term can be implied when it is reasonable. 20th-Century Photographers: Robert Capa, Jean Weinberg, W. Hanselman, Pitch White $14.14 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Robert Capa (October 22, 1913 May 25, 1954), born Endre Ern Friedmann, was a Hungarian combat photographer and photojournalist who covered five different wars: the Spanish Civil War, the Second Sino-Japanese War, World War II across Europe, the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, and the First Indochina War. He documented the course of World War II in London, North Africa, Italy, the Battle of Normandy on Omaha Beach and the liberation of Paris. His action photographs, such as those taken during the 1944 Normandy invasion, portray the violence of war with unique impact. In 1947, Capa co-founded Magnum Photos with, among others, the French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson. The organization was the first cooperative agency for worldwide freelance photographers. Born Endre Friedmann to Dezs and Júlia Friedmann on October 22, 1913 in Budapest, Hungary. Deciding that there was little future under the regime in Hungary, he left home at 18. Capa originally wanted to be a writer; however, he found work in photography in Berlin and grew to love the art. In 1933, he moved from Germany to France because of the rise of Nazism, but found it difficult to find work there as a freelance journalist. He adopted the name “Robert Capa” around this time because he felt that it would be recognizable and American-sounding since it was similar to that of film director Frank Capra. (In fact, “cápa” is a Hungarian word meaning ‘shark’.) Loyalist Militiaman at the Moment of Death, Cerro Muriano, September 5, 1936From 1936 to 1939, he was in Spain, photographing the horrors of the Spanish Civil War, along with Gerda Taro, his companion and professional photography partner, and David Seymour. In 1938, he traveled to the Chinese city of Wuhan to document the resistance to the Japane… More: |

A First Year in Canterbury Settlement $0.99 Samuel Butler (1835–1902) became famous with his satirical Utopian novel Erewhon, based on his experiences as a sheep farmer in New Zealand and published, initially anonymously, in 1872. This earlier book, published in London in 1863 while he was still abroad, is a compilation of his letters home. Having obtained a degree in Classics from Cambridge, Butler had left England in 1859 with generous funding from his father, who hoped that making his fortune in the colonies would cure his son’s ambition to become an artist. Butler was highly successful in his farming enterprise, and his letters provide both financial details and information on the practicalities of animal husbandry, pasture management and colonial life. Butler also explored Canterbury and travelled to the Southern Alps, and describes vividly the landscapes, flora and fauna of South Island. This classic source for New Zealand history also sheds light on Butler’s later work. |

A Town Like Paris: Falling in Love in the City of Light $12.95 At the age of twenty-eight, stuck in a dead-end job in London, and on the run from a broken heart, Bryce Corbett takes a job in Paris, home of l’amour and la vie boheme; he is determined to make the city his own—no matter how many bottles of Bordeaux it takes. He rents an apartment in Le Marais, the heart of the city’s gay district, hardly the ideal place for a guy hoping to woo French women. He quickly settles into the French work/life balance with its mandatory lunch hour and six weeks of paid vacation. Fully embracing his newfound culture, Corbett frequents smoky cafes, appears on a television game show, hobnobs with celebrities at Cannes, and attempts to parse the nuances behind French politics and why French women really don’t get fat. When he falls in love with a Parisian showgirl, he realizes that his adopted city has become home. As lively and winning as Peter Mayle’s A Year in Provence and Sarah Turnbull’s Almost French, A Town Like Paris evokes the beauty, delights, and charms of Paris for an ever-eager audience of armchair travelers. |

It was a lovely day. This was about the time of the great railway mania. The coach was full of railway engineers, surveyors, and speculators, and their talk was of new lines, cuttings, tunnels, and viaducts. This was the opening out of a new world to me, who had never seen a railway. I travelled by train from Birmingham to London, and my first night in a second- rate hotel near the station (for I had arrived late) I am never likely to forget. I suppose my wholesome flesh was a sort of godsend to starved inhabitants of that bed of a kind that I had never before even heard of. I had quitted my dear old home with regret, and that night I bitterly repented having left it. I was, I am sure, the first and the least worthy of all my race who had ever dwelt in London, and I longed, how I longed, to leave it. But I had come to London to make my fortune (that elusive phantom) like many another ambitious youth. I had brought with me a good constitution, a ” little Latin and less Greek” in my head, a little money in my pocket, a good conscience, full trust in Providence, and a determination to work. My good mother had died a year before I left home, and shortly after my dear old father gave up his farm and retired to another county.Only once after many years did I find the opportunity of revisiting the scenes of my childhood, and then all was changed, All, all, were gone, the old familiar faces. Excerpt: Adrenalize – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia At the end of the Hysteria World Tour in October 1988, Def Leppard vowed to the press that their next album would not take another four years to be released, and quickly reconvened weeks later to start work. However, Steve Clark’s alcoholism was taking a turn for the worse. Whereas touring had kept him sober onstage, offstage his condition was beginning to affect his work in the studio. In addition, Mutt Lange was unavailable to return as producer as he was working with Canadian rocker Bryan Adams on Waking Up the Neighbours. The band chose to produce the album themselves. Steve’s problems did not help to advance progress and in fact, was starting to set them back. In late 1989, Clark would be found unconscious in a gutter in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was immediately sent to rehab, and band members (along with Lange) started attending confrontational therapy to attempt to shame him into defeating his addictions. In a desperate move to help their friend, guitar tech Malvin Mortimer (AKA Stumpus Maximus) would be assigned to keep a 24 hour watch on Clark, according to Joe Elliott, it was a difficult task. None of this would prove to be fruitful, and in August 1990 the band granted Clark a six-month leave of absence. While it was hoped that this break would free him of any stresses, the band seemed resigned to the fact that they could no longer do anything for Clark. On January 8, 1991, Steve Clark was found dead in his London home by his girlfriend Janie Dean. The coroner’s report revealed that Clark had died of an accidental mix of alcohol with painkillers and anti-depressants that led to compression of the brain stem. After a short period of uncertainty about the band’s future, the remaining memb… More: |

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Arthur Edward Pearse Brome Weigall (1880-1934) was an English Egyptologist, stage designer, journalist and author whose works span the whole range from histories of Ancient Egypt through historical biographies, guide-books, popular novels, screenplays and lyrics.Arthur Weigall was born in the year in which his father, an army officer, died on the North West Frontier. As a young widow, his mother turned missionary in the inner-city slums of late-Victorian England. So Arthur Weigall went from an unconventional home life in Salford to Wellington College, a school with strong establishment and military connections. He started work as an apprentice clerk in the City of London, but a youthful fascination with genealogy led him to the pharaohs of Ancient Egypt and so into Egyptology. A mysterious patroness encouraged him to apply for New College, Oxford. This was a mistake (Egyptology was not yet studied at Oxford) so he went on to Leipzig, and on his return to England found work with Flinders Petrie, first at University College London and then at Abydos in Egypt. |

Bill Culbert: Making Light Work $49.95 Celebrating one of New Zealand’s most distinguished artists, this substantial monograph reviews the artistic accomplishments of Bill Culbert. Exploring the predilections and passions that have fueled Culbert’s art over the past 50 years, this account presents an in-depth exploration of his preoccupation with light—stemming from his days as a student in London in the late 1950s. Demonstrating how he has deployed his concepts through numerous mediums, this survey illustrates the domestic-scaled works, dazzling large-scale museum installations, and public spaces such as the Champs Elysées in Paris and the Millennium Dome in London. Suggesting that energy, travel, congeniality, and conviviality are also key to understanding Culbert’s work, this study depicts the diversity of his pieces, from wall-mounted light sculptures made of white fluorescent tubes and colored plastic containers to his installations of objects from the dump near his home. Binding Chair: Or, A Visit from the Foot Emancipation Society $0.01 In poised and elegant prose, Kathryn Harrison weaves in The Binding Chair; or, A Visit from the Foot Emancipation Society a stunning story of women, travel, and flight; of love, revenge, and fear; of the search for home and the need to escape it. Set in alluring Shanghai at the turn of the century, The Binding Chair intertwines the destinies of a Chinese woman determined to forget her past and a Western girl focused on the promises of the future.Beautiful, charismatic, destructive, May escapes an ar-ranged marriage in rural nineteenth-century China for life in a Shanghai brothel, where she meets Arthur, an Australian whose philanthropic pursuits lead him into one scrape after another. As a member of the Foot Emancipation Society, Arthur calls on May not for his pleasure but for her rehabilitation, only to find himself immediately and helplessly seduced by the sight of her bound feet. Reforming May is out of the question, so love-struck Arthur marries her instead and brings her home to live with him, his sister and brother-in-law, and their two girls, Alice and Cecily. In Alice, May sees the possibility of redemption: a surrogate for a child she has lost. And it is to May that Alice turns for the love her own mother withholds. But when the twelve-year-old is caught preparing her aunt’s opium pipe, she is shipped off to a London boarding school, far from the dangerous influence of the woman who will come to reclaim her and to control the whole family. The Binding Chair unfolds among scenes of astonishing beauty and cruelty, in a lawless place where traditions and cultures clash, and where tragedy threatens a world built on the banks ofunsettled waters—from the bustling Whangpoo River to the lake of blood in the Chinese afterworld. By turns shocking, exquisite, and hilarious, The Binding Chair is another spellbinding literary triumph by the writer whose work Michiko Kakutani of The New York Times has called |

Born Sandy Devotional [Deluxe Edition] $14.98 With Born Sandy Devotional, the Triffids fully realized the potential shown on their earlier releases, Treeless Plain and Raining Pleasure. By 1985 the band was based in London, but despite the fact that this album was recorded 9,000 miles from home, its roots lie deep in the Triffids’ native western Australia. While the spectacular cover photograph featuring the township of Mandurah provides a sense of place, David McComb’s songwriting evokes his home environment all the more vividly. Indeed, this is the most accomplished work from McComb’s tragically short career, encapsulating his talent for creating a lyrical and musical resonance between the stark, isolated geography of western Australia and universally recognizable, desolate interior landscapes. Born Sandy Devotional certainly is dark, its lyrics replete with death, psychological turmoil, and despair, but it’s never maudlin or banal. McComb’s commanding delivery combines with expansive, string-adorned arrangements to elevate many of these songs to the level of high emotional drama; haunting keyboards, vibes, and “Evil” Graham Lee’s pedal steel add atmospheric detail. The elusive quality of McComb’s writing makes his stories all the more compelling and memorable as he offers listeners fragmented, unresolved scenes instead of comfortable, complete narratives. Such elements coalesce sublimely on “Stolen Property” and “The Seabirds,” songs of loss and suicide, respectively, but the anthemic “Wide Open Road” and the intense, claustrophobic “Lonely Stretch” are the standouts. Another tale of life gone wrong, “Tarrilup Bridge” sets organist Jill Birt’s childlike vocals amid an eerie ambience of vibes and strings. Nevertheless, the album closes on a cautiously optimistic note with Birt’s duet with McComb, “Tender Is the Night.” Born Sandy Devotional was a landmark release for the Triffids. More than that, it stands as a testament to McComb’s status as one of Australia’s most gifted (and overlooked) ro… |

Burton Holmes Travelogues $89.43 Wanderlust: Burton Holmes, the father of the Travelogue All the delights of travel for those who stay at home. In a time before air travel or radio, on the brink of a revolution in photography and filmmaking, Burton Holmes (1870-1958) set upon a lifelong journey to bring the world home. From the grand boulevards of Paris to China’s Great Wall, from the first modern Olympics in Athens to the 1906 eruption of Mount Vesuvius, Holmes delighted in finding ?the beautiful way around the world? and made a career of sharing his stories, photographs, and films with audiences across America. From the grand boulevards of Paris to China’s Great Wall, from the first modern Olympics in Athens to the 1906 eruption of Mount Vesuvius, Holmes delighted in finding ‘the beautiful way around the world’ and made a career of sharing his stories, photographs, and films with audiences across America. As a young man, Holmes was mentored by John L. Stoddard, a pioneer of the U.S. travel lecture circuit, who passed on his well-established mantle when he retired. Holmes roamed the globe throughout the summer and traversed the United States all winter, transforming the staid lecture tradition into an entertaining show. He coined the term ‘Travelogue’ in 1904 to advertise his unique performance and thrilled audiences with two-hour sets of stories timed to projections of hand-painted glass-lantern slides and some of the first “moving pictures.” Paris, Peking, Dehli, Dubrovnick, Moscow, Manila, Jakarta, Jerusalem: Burton Holmes was there. He visited every continent and nearly every country on the planet, shooting over 30,000 photographs and nearly 500,000 feet of film. This book represents the best of the Holmes archive, brimming with brilliant color photographs not published in decades. A rare window on the world of 100 years ago, Burton Holmes Travelogues will transport you to a time that has all but evaporated, and inspire you to strike out on a journey of your own. The author: In the 1960s, Genoa Caldwell wasthe New York-based photo researcher for the London Sunday Times, as well as photo editor for both Black Star and Magnum. While operating her own photo agency in Los Angeles in the 1970s, Caldwell was introduced to the work of Burton Holmes and became private archivist |

C. S. Lewis in a Time of War: The World War II Broadcasts That Riveted a Nation and Became the Classic Mere Christianity $1.99 C. S. Lewis is universally recognized as one of the intellectual giants of the twentieth century. A noted scholar, Lewis was able to reach a vast popular audience during his lifetime and continues to attract thousands of new readers every year. But how did Lewis first become a popular public figure? During the most desperate years of World War II, Lewis was asked by the British Broadcasting Corporation’s recently created Home Service to give radio addresses on Christianity to a nation shaken by war. The choice was controversial. At first dismissed by critics as a layman who was unqualified to tackle such weighty issues, Lewis proved to be enormously persuasive. These radio talks were eventually published as Mere Christianity, which now ranks as one of the great classics of religious literature. This rich chapter in Lewis’s life, which deals with his love-hate relationship with the “new” medium of broadcasting, has received little attention from biographers and commentators. Yet it was Lewis’s work on the radio that made him a household name. By combining narrative skill and adroitly quoting from correspondence, Phillips captures Lewis’s reservations, vexations, achievements, and, finally, his enormous success.C. S. Lewis in a Time of War is a fascinating look at how these talks were created and the enthusiastic response they generated at a time when bombing in London caused many radio stations to be evacuated. This book reveals a rich, previously untapped vein of Lewis’s life and work that will intrigue his millions of fans. |

Call of Duty: A Montana Girl in World War II $24.95 Montana-born Grace Porter was teaching school in Iowa when, in 1942, she turned twenty-one and became eligible for service in the U.S. armed forces. Patriotic and adventurous, she volunteered to join the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps, later the Women’s Army Corps (WAC). A tough basic-training course in which she underwent most of the same hardships as the men, including long marches and latrine duty, strengthened her for future experiences. When the opportunity arose during the blitz and buzz-bomb days, Porter volunteered to go overseas. She and thirty-nine other WACs, along with thousands of male soldiers, crossed the North Atlantic on the Queen Mary in February 1944. Stationed in London, Porter served as a cryptographic technician during the campaigns of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe, and Air Offensive Europe. Soon after the battle of the Bulge began, she was sent to Belgium, where she continued to work in cryptographics near – and once, accidently, across – the front lines of combat. As Grace Porter Miller demonstrates in Call of Duty, being in the WAC during World War II afforded her many thrilling experiences. She encountered fascinating people, traveled throughout the United States and Europe, and participated in a dramatic chapter of history. But the price she paid to serve her country was high. Like many other military women, she endured prejudice and harassment, witnessed the vast suffering of European refugees, withstood the constant threat of danger, and long after returning home suffered from serious health problems and nightmares. Despite their outstanding qualifications and record of service, the girls of World War II continued to be treated like second-class soldiers after the war. Now, fifty years later, one of their number urges us to recognize the sacrifices and contributions these unsung heroes made for our country. |

Church And Society In Trinidad Part I & Ii $19.08 IT was a result of my initial thrust into research activity of the Christian Churches among the East Indians in Trinidad during the period of indentureship that I was led to research the history of the Catholic Church in Trinidad. I am therefore indebted to Dr. Brinsley Samaroo for suggesting this topic. My deepest gratitude goes to Professor K.O. Laurence, who guided my research for my M.A. degree.I am thankful to Ildefons Schroots, O.S.B., my confrere, who made available to me the transcripts of the documents of the Vatican Archives, when they were lodged at the Regional Seminary of St. John Vianney and The Ugandan Martyrs. This was made possible by the kind permission of the then Vicar Provincial of the Irish Dominican Order in Trinidad, Fr. Damian Byrne.I am indeed grateful for help I received in the various foreign archives, namely The Public Record Office, London; The National Archives, Madrid; The Simancas Archives at Simanca in Spain; and The National Academy of History in Venezuela. At home, I received immense help from the late Enos Siewlal, Government Archivist and also from Archbishop Anthony Pantin in Archbishop’s House Archives, which was extremely limited for the period under study.I would also like to thank Miss Stephanie Thomas who typed the first draft, and June Prempeh who typed the final draft. I would like to thank the ex-Abbot Bernard Vlaar of Mt. St. Benedict, who gave me the green light for higher studies. Most of all I received the greatest help from Mr. Rupert Laydoo, for editing and putting an index to this book.Any inaccuracies that may be found in this work I acknowledge them to be mine. However, I hope this book would be useful in Seminaries,Theological Colleges, Universities, Training Colleges and to all those who are interested in the Ecclesiastical History of Trinidad.Fr. John Thomas Harricharan, M.A. Trinidad. |

Constable $69.95 This lavishly illustrated monograph of the great British landscapist John Constable (1776-1837) presents a definitive survey of the painter’s life and works. Jonathan Clarkson offers a comprehensive assessment of Constable’s oeuvre, from his earliest line drawings to his last masterpieces, including pencil drawings, quick outdoor oil sketches, painstakingly worked studio canvases, and less well-known portraits.Born the son of a miller, merchant, and gentleman farmer in the small village of East Bergholt, Suffolk, it was not immediately obvious that John Constable would pursue a career in the art world. However, the young Constable became a keen amateur landscape painted, inspired by the rural surroundings of his beloved Bergholdt home. With the encouragement of local wealthy connoisseur Sir George Beaumont, whose collection introduced the artist to such masters of landscape as Claude Lorrain, and an allowance from his father, Constable was admitted to the Royal Academy Schools, London, in 1799. There he studied the work of such masters as Lorrain, Gainsborough, and Ruisdael and developed his own style of meticulous observation of natural detail combined with contemporary artistic theory. Upon leaving the Academy, Constable rejected a financially rewarding position as a drawing master in favor of sketching and painting in the English countryside for nearly ten years. He spent his time in pursuit of an honest yet coherent and dignified ‘natural’ style, and pioneered the revolutionary practice of making finished paintings outdoors, direct from nature. Commercial success came with Constable’s decision to exhibit large works at the British Institution. These ‘six-footers,’ which secured his position among the greatest British painters of his age, included such enduringly famous canvases as The Hay Wain.In this new monograph Clarkson looks at these grand paintings with a fresh view, investigating what we can actually see in them. Set against the rapidly changing |
