work home online
How can I work from home online?

Are there any strategies to work from home online? And no I don’t mean a program that I buy. I just want to know if there are any tricks to buying stuff cheap and selling it.

You could try buying products really cheap somewhere like IShop4Cheap.com, then resell them for far above what you bought them for. It is an auction site where you pay to bid, however all items seem to sell for no more than half price and they are all brand new. They also auction off instant cash transfers of $100 and $500.

Although not entirely completed, the Court Opera (Hofoper ) was inaugurated with a performance of Carl Heinrich Graun’s Cleopatra e Cesare on December 7, 1742. This event marked the beginning of the successful, 250-year co-operation between the Staatsoper and the Staatskapelle Berlin , the state orchestra, whose roots trace back to the 16th century. In 1842, Gottfried Wilhelm Taubert instituted the tradition of regular symphonic concerts. In the same year, Giacomo Meyerbeer succeeded Gaspare Spontini as General Music Director. Source: Wikipedia. Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: The Female American; or, The Adventures of Unca Eliza Winkfield, is a novel, originally published in 1767, under the pseudonym of the main character/narrator, Unca Eliza Winkfield and edited in recent editions by Michelle Burnham. The novel describes the adventures of a half-Native American, half-English woman, who is shipwrecked on a deserted isle. The protagonist uses her knowledge of Christianity to convert the indigenous inhabitants on the island as part of her survival mode. This work belongs to the literary genre of the Robinsonade, in that – like other works of its era – it emulates Daniel Defoe’s 1719 novel Robinson Crusoe. Although there are many similarities to Defoe’s novel, the differences are what make The Female American distinctive. For instance, the narrator is not only a woman but is also biracial, as the daughter of a Native American princess and an English settler who resided in Virginia. The protagonist is also multilingual. Although Defoe’s protagonist (Robinson Crusoe) chooses to leave his home and set out into an unexplored and dangerous life abroad, Winkfield’s protagonist’s (Unca Eliza Winkfield) trials and adventures are forced upon her. It is only in the latter part of the narrative that the female protagonist finds a living condition on the island that is more favorable than her American or European origins. In addition, the novel engages with the theme of finding one’s home away from the native land, which can be identified in a range of fiction of 18th-century England.

Excerpt: The “Word of Wisdom” is the common name of a section of the Doctrine and Covenants, a book considered by many churches within the Latter Day Saint movement to consist of revelations from God. It is also the name of a health code based on this scripture, practiced most strictly by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), and to a lesser extent, some other Latter Day Saint denominations. In the LDS Church, compliance with the Word of Wisdom is currently a prerequisite for baptism, service in missionary work, attendance at church schools, and entry into the church’s temples; however, violation of the code is not considered to be grounds for excommunication or other disciplinary action. The scripture discourages “hot drinks”, the non-medicinal use of tobacco, the consumption of wine (excluding sacramental wine) or “strong drinks”, and the consumption of meat, except sparing use only in time of winter or famine. The scripture also recommends the consumption of herbs, fruits, and grains, as well as grain-based “mild drinks”. As practiced by the LDS Church, there is no firm restriction relating to meat consumption, but there are additional restrictions against narcotics, and all alcoholic beverages are forbidden, including “mild drinks” such as beer. The LDS Church interprets “hot drinks” to mean coffee and tea (except herbal tea). According to Joseph Smith, Jr., the founder of the Latter Day Saint movement, the Word of Wisdom was received in 1833 as a revelation from God. After Smith’s death, Brigham Young stated that the revelation was given in response to problems encountered while conducting meetings in the Smith family home: “When they assembled together in this room after breakfast, the first they did was to light their pi… More:

It is currently unavailable from any major publisher, but may be found in several reprint editions. Helen tells the story of a young orphan, Helen Stanley, whose guardian, Dean Stanley, has squandered his fortune and left Helen without means of support. She is forced to take up residence with the local vicar, whose wife is astonished that none of the Stanleys’ aristocratic friends have offered a refuge to her. Eventually, however, the Davenant family returns from abroad and invite Helen to their daughter’s new home, Clarendon Park. (Cecilia Davenant has just married General Clarendon.) Helen journeys to join her dear friend Cecilia, and the first half of the novel describes Helen’s experiences among the most fortunate of Britain’s elite under the tutelage of Lady Davenant, who in some ways favors Helen over her own daughter Cecilia. In the second and more dramatic half of the novel, Lady Davenant departs with her husband, who has been named ambassador at the Court of St. Petersburg, Russia. Helen is left to the care of General Clarendon and Cecilia. By this time she is engaged to Granville Beauclerc, a young and handsome man who is another of Lady Davenant’s favorites. All does not run smoothly for Helen, however. Before her marriage, Cecilia has carried on an amorous correspondence with Colonel d’Aubigny, a worthless roué who has since died. These letters reappear in a packet addressed to Cecilia’s husband. Cecilia implores Helen to act as if the

Source: Wikipedia. Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl is a book that was published in 1861 by Harriet Jacobs, using the pen name “Linda Brent”. While on one level it chronicles the experiences of Harriet Jacobs as a slave, and the various humiliations she had to endure in that unhappy state, it also deals with the particular tortures visited on women at her station. Often in the book, she will point to a particular punishment that a male slave will endure at the hands of slave holders, and comment that, although she finds the punishment brutal in the extreme, it cannot compare to the abuse that a young woman must face while still on the cusp of girlhood. Incidents in the Life of Slave Girl is considered a slave narrative. Portions of it were first published in serial form before being published as a complete work in 1861, after some difficulty finding a publisher. It is also considered an example of feminist literature. Linda Brent- The lead protagonist and a pseudonym for Harriet Jacobs. In the story, Linda at a young age is unaware of her being a slave due to the fact of her parents not telling her and her parents’ masters allowing them to have their own home and raise their family. She faces betrayal and harassment by her many white masters. Linda along the way learns how to defend herself against her masters. Also later on she is torn between her wants of personal freedom and her feeling of personal responsibility to her family, especially her children Benny and Ellen. Dr. Flint- Linda’s master, enemy and would be lover (Linda doesn’t let this happen).

Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Great Expectations is a novel by Charles Dickens. It was first published in serial form in the publication All the Year Round from 1 December 1860 to August 1861. It has been adapted for stage and screen over 250 times. Great Expectations is written in the style of bildungsroman, which follows the story of a man or woman in their quest for maturity, usually starting from childhood and ending in the main character’s eventual adulthood. Great Expectations is the story of the orphan Pip, writing about his life and attempting to become a gentleman along the way. The novel can also be considered semi-autobiographical of Dickens, like much of his work, drawing on his experiences of life and people. The main plot of Great Expectations takes place between Christmas Eve 1812, when the protagonist is about seven years old (and which happens to be the year of Dickens’ birth), and the winter of 1840. On Christmas Eve of 1812, Pip, a boy aged 7, encounters an escaped convict in the village churchyard while visiting his mother and father’s graves. The convict scares Pip into stealing food for him and a file to grind away his leg shackles. He threatens Pip not to tell anyone and do as he says or his friend will cut out Pip’s heart. Pip returns home, where he lives with Mrs. Joe, his older sister, and her husband Joe Gargery. His sister is very cruel and beats him and Joe regularly, while Joe is much more kind to Pip. Early the next morning, Pip steals food and drink from the Gargery pantry (including a pie for their Christmas feast) and sneaks out to the graveyard. It is the first time in Pips life hes felt truly guilty. This is an important event in the book because the convict will never forget the kindness

Excerpt: The Symphony in E, first performed on March 10, 1866, was the only symphony composed by Arthur Sullivan. It is frequently called the ‘Irish’ Symphony. There are four movements: The playing time is about thirty five minutes (or slightly longer if the exposition repeat is taken in the first movement). Sullivan began work on his symphony in 1863, very early in his career. From holiday in Ireland, he wrote that ‘as I was jolting home through wind and rain… in an open jaunting-car, the whole first movement of a symphony came into my head with a real Irish flavour about it besides scraps of the other movements.” The composer later wrote, “I always meant to call it the ‘Irish Symphony’, but I modestly refrained, as it was courting comparison with the ‘Scotch Symphony’.” The title did not appear on the published score until after Sullivan’s death, in the Novello edition of 1915. The first performance of the symphony was at The Crystal Palace in March 1866, thanks to the popular singer, Jenny Lind, who sponsored the concert and attracted an audience of 3,000 for her singing in the first half of the programme. The conductor was August Manns who had previously conducted the première of Sullivan’s incidental music to The Tempest. The symphony was well received, though the music critics, both then and later, observed the influence of other composers. The Times wrote, “Mr Sullivan should abjure Mendelssohn, even Beethoven and above all Schumann, for a year and a day.” In his 1960 study of Sullivan’s music Gervase Hughes also detects echoes of Schumann, and of Schubert as well. The symphony was performed frequently during Sullivan’s lifetime, but received few performances in the twentieth century. It has, however, been performed more frequently in recent… More:

Excerpt: Sumpter v Hedges 1 QB 673 is an English contract law case, concerning substantial performance of a contract and restitution for unjust enrichment. Mr Sumpter was a builder. He had a contract to build two houses and stables for Mr Hedges for £565. He did work valued at £333 and said he had to stop because he had no more money. He had already been paid part. Hedges finished the building, using materials which Sumpter had left behind. Sumpter sued for the outstanding money. Bruce J found that Mr Sumpter had abandoned the contract, and said he could get money for the value of the materials but nothing for the work. The Court of Appeal found that Mr Sumpter had abandoned the building work and emphasised that this left Mr Hedges without any choice of whether to adopt the work. They held that Mr Hedges did have to pay for the building materials that he used, but did not need to reimburse Mr Sumpter for the half built structures. AL Smith LJ gave the leading judgment. Excerpt: Liverpool City Council v Irwin UKHL 1 is a leading English contract law case, concerning the basis on which courts may imply terms into contracts. There was a fifteen storey tower block known as the Piggeries in Everton, Liverpool. It had seventy units, a stairwell, two lifts, and a rubbish chute. Mr and Mrs Irwin were tenants from July 1966. The common parts were vandalised, the lifts did not work, the stair lights failed, the chute was blocked, lavatory cisterns blocked and overflowed. The tenants refused to pay rent. In an action by the council to eject them, they counterclaimed that the council was in breach of a duty to keep the common parts of the estates in decent repair. Lord Denning MR dissented from Roskill LJ and Ormrod LJ and argued that a contractual term can be implied when it is reasonable. Chapters: Boston Strangler, Martin Grossman. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 18. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Boston Strangler is a name attributed to the murderer (or murderers) of several women in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, in the early 1960s. Though the crimes were attributed to Albert DeSalvo, investigators of the case have since suggested the murders (sometimes known as the silk stocking murders) were not committed by one person. Between June 14, 1962 and January 4, 1964, 13 single women (between the ages of 19 and 85) were murdered in the Boston area. Most had been sexually assaulted in their apartments and were murdered in the manner indicated above. Without any sign of forced entry into their dwellings, the women were assumed to have either known their assailant or have voluntarily allowed him into their homes, believing him to be an apartment maintenance person or some other service person. While the police were not convinced that all of these murders were the work of a single individual, much of the public believed so. The media certainly fueled the idea of a single murderer referring to him with names such as ‘The Phantom’ and ‘The Sunset Killer’ before settling on ‘The Boston Strangler.’ Gainsborough Street, site of the first murder attributed to the Boston strangler. On October 27, 1964, a stranger entered a young woman’s home posing as a detective. He tied his victim to her bed, proceeded to sexually assault her, and suddenly left, saying “I’m sorry” as he went. The woman’s description led police to identify the assailant as Albert DeSalvo and when his photo was published, many women identified him as the man who had assaulted them. Earlier on October 27, DeSalvo had posed as a motorist with car trouble and attempted to enter a home in Bridgewater, …More:

Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Robert Capa (October 22, 1913 May 25, 1954), born Endre Ern Friedmann, was a Hungarian combat photographer and photojournalist who covered five different wars: the Spanish Civil War, the Second Sino-Japanese War, World War II across Europe, the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, and the First Indochina War. He documented the course of World War II in London, North Africa, Italy, the Battle of Normandy on Omaha Beach and the liberation of Paris. His action photographs, such as those taken during the 1944 Normandy invasion, portray the violence of war with unique impact. In 1947, Capa co-founded Magnum Photos with, among others, the French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson. The organization was the first cooperative agency for worldwide freelance photographers. Born Endre Friedmann to Dezs and Júlia Friedmann on October 22, 1913 in Budapest, Hungary. Deciding that there was little future under the regime in Hungary, he left home at 18. Capa originally wanted to be a writer; however, he found work in photography in Berlin and grew to love the art. In 1933, he moved from Germany to France because of the rise of Nazism, but found it difficult to find work there as a freelance journalist. He adopted the name “Robert Capa” around this time because he felt that it would be recognizable and American-sounding since it was similar to that of film director Frank Capra. (In fact, “cápa” is a Hungarian word meaning ‘shark’.) Loyalist Militiaman at the Moment of Death, Cerro Muriano, September 5, 1936From 1936 to 1939, he was in Spain, photographing the horrors of the Spanish Civil War, along with Gerda Taro, his companion and professional photography partner, and David Seymour. In 1938, he traveled to the Chinese city of Wuhan to document the resistance to the Japane… More:

A Treasury of Great American Scandals: Tantalizing True Tales of Historic Misbehavior by the Founding Fathers and Others Who Let Freedom Swing

A Treasury of Great American Scandals: Tantalizing True Tales of Historic Misbehavior by the Founding Fathers and Others Who Let Freedom Swing

$0.01

Following on the heels of his national bestseller A Treasury of Royal Scandals, Michael Farquhar turns his attention to matters a little closer to home with A Treasury of Great American Scandals. From the unhappy family relationships of prominent Americans to the feuds, smear campaigns, duels, and infamous sex scandals that have punctuated our history, we see our founding fathers and other American heroes in the course of their all-too-human events. Ineffectual presidents, lazy generals, traitors; treacherous fathers, nagging mothers, ungrateful children, embarrassing siblings; and stories about insanity, death, and disturbing postmortems are all here, as are disagreeable marriages, vile habits, and, of course, sex: good sex, bad sex, and good-bad sex too. We can take comfort in the fact that we are no worse and no better than our forebears. But we do have better media coverage. Bonus educational material: * A brief history of the United States, including scandals! * The American Hall of Shame! * A complete listing of presidential administrations! Author Biography: Michael Farquhar is the author of A Treasury of Royal Scandals. As a writer and editor at the Washington Post, he specializes in history. His work has also appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Dallas Morning News, Reader’s Digest, and Newsday, as well as on Discovery Online.

He played for Birmingham City in the top flight and for several clubs in the North of England in the lower divisions of the Football League. His reaction to the move was quoted thus: “It was a total surprise when manager Reg Freeman pulled me aside at the training ground to tell me of The Blues’ interest. I was so excited that when I went back to the training session I lost concentration and went sliding off onto the gravel edge. When I met up with Blues officials later that day I had both my hands bandaged and found it hard to sign the contract!”Bodle played one first-team game for his new club before the outbreak of the Second World War put an end to League football. He made occasional appearances for the club in wartime competition, as well as guesting for Rotherham and Doncaster, for whom he scored 27 goals. He returned to Birmingham to play … More:

On any given week millions of adults around the world can be found gathering in libraries, parks, zoos, arboretums, and museums in person or online. These cultural institutions are seen as repositories of knowledge and collections of a community’s cultural or natural heritage. However, they are much more. They are structures that promote cognitive change: commons, places of community outside of home and work, where individuals and groups gather to share and discuss ideas. Cultural institutions may be sites of conflict and contestation where economic and political challenges call into action institutional purpose and mission, and debates emerge over whose story is told. They can also serve as sites of deliberative democracy that foster social change and reform, where community members can engage with challenging and important societal issues. This volume aims to forge a stronger relationship between adult educators and educators within cultural institutions in an effort to better understand adult learning and teaching within these sites of nonformal education and the role these institutions play in society. This is the 127th volume of the Jossey-Bass higher education quarterly report series New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education. Noted for its depth of coverage, New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education is an indispensable series that explores issues of common interest to instructors, administrators, counselors, and policymakers in a broad range of adult and continuing education settings, such as colleges and universities, extension programs, businesses, libraries, and museums.

Excerpt: Malalai Kakar (1967 28 September 2008) was the most high-profile policewoman in Afghanistan after the ousting of the Taliban in 2001 . A Lieutenant Colonel, she was the head of Kandahar’s department of crimes against women. Kakar, who received numerous death threats, was assassinated by the Taliban on September 28, 2008. She was shot dead between 7:00am and 8:00am in her car outside of her house while on the way to work. When Kakar was killed she was reported to be either in her late 30s or early to mid 40s and had 6 children. Kakar joined the police force in 1982, following in the footsteps of her father and brothers. She was the first woman to graduate from the Kandahar Police Academy, and the first to become an investigator with the Kandahar Police Department. The fate of Malalai Kakar illustrates the intricacies of gender issues in law enforcement in Afghanistan. Female Afghan police offiers leave their homes hidden by a burqa, to don a police uniform and weapon at the police station to do their job. End of 2009 there were about 500 active duty policewomen in Afghanistan, compared with about 92,500 policemen. A few dozen serve in the southern provinces Kandahar and Helmand, where the influence of the Taliban is strongest. Policewomen play an essential role in the war against insurgents in Afghanistan. In a culture that is marked by a strict separation of the sexes, the security forces need women to perform special tasks, like the searching of women and homes. They are essential to conduct home searches, since Afghans are deeply offended when male soldiers or police enter premises where women are present, and at checkpoints men cannot search women for concealed weapons and other contraband. In December 2009, Col. Shafiqa Quraisha, the he… More:

Excerpt: Old Wave is an album by Ringo Starr, released in 1983 as the follow-up to 1981′s Stop and Smell the Roses. In early 1982, Starr was eager to move on to his next project. Deciding that he needed more consistency this time around, he would work with only one producer, Joe Walsh, a former member of the recently disbanded Eagles. Walsh and Starr had known each other since the mid-1970s, having met and befriended each other in Los Angeles. Walsh immediately agreed to work with Starr and they met in February to begin writing material. After John Lennon’s murder, Starr no longer felt safe in the US and returned home to England to live at Tittenhurst Park, which Starr purchased from Lennon in 1973. Having converted Lennon’s recording studio into Startling Studios, Starr would record his new album there. Beginning in March, Starr was joined not only by Walsh, but Gary Brooker (formerly of Procol Harum), The Who’s John Entwistle, Ray Cooper and Eric Clapton on one track. With none of his usual celebrity mates helping out, this was largely a Starr/Walsh album and the spotlight would be mostly on them. The album’s titling of Old Wave is a play on New Wave and an acknowledgment by Starr that an “old waver” like him is still up to the challenge. As an indication of his vitality, the cover of the album features a black and white photo of Starr in his pre-Beatles days. Recording of the album went smoothly and was completed by summer. As Starr’s RCA Records contract had been cancelled, he needed to find a new label for Old Wave. Thou… More:

Excerpt: Adrenalize – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia At the end of the Hysteria World Tour in October 1988, Def Leppard vowed to the press that their next album would not take another four years to be released, and quickly reconvened weeks later to start work. However, Steve Clark’s alcoholism was taking a turn for the worse. Whereas touring had kept him sober onstage, offstage his condition was beginning to affect his work in the studio. In addition, Mutt Lange was unavailable to return as producer as he was working with Canadian rocker Bryan Adams on Waking Up the Neighbours. The band chose to produce the album themselves. Steve’s problems did not help to advance progress and in fact, was starting to set them back. In late 1989, Clark would be found unconscious in a gutter in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was immediately sent to rehab, and band members (along with Lange) started attending confrontational therapy to attempt to shame him into defeating his addictions. In a desperate move to help their friend, guitar tech Malvin Mortimer (AKA Stumpus Maximus) would be assigned to keep a 24 hour watch on Clark, according to Joe Elliott, it was a difficult task. None of this would prove to be fruitful, and in August 1990 the band granted Clark a six-month leave of absence. While it was hoped that this break would free him of any stresses, the band seemed resigned to the fact that they could no longer do anything for Clark. On January 8, 1991, Steve Clark was found dead in his London home by his girlfriend Janie Dean. The coroner’s report revealed that Clark had died of an accidental mix of alcohol with painkillers and anti-depressants that led to compression of the brain stem. After a short period of uncertainty about the band’s future, the remaining memb… More:

 All the Flowers Are Dying

All the Flowers Are Dying

$7.99

In his sixteenth Matthew Scudder novel, All the Flowers Are Dying, New York Times bestselling author Lawrence Block takes the award-winning series to a new level of suspense and a new depth of characterization. A man in a Virginia prison awaits execution for three hideous murders he swears — in the face of irrefutable evidence — he did not commit. A psychologist, who claims to believe the convict, spends hours with the man in his death row cell, and ultimately watches in the gallery as the lethal injection is administered. His work completed, the psychologist heads back to New York City to attend to unfinished business. Meanwhile, Scudder has just agreed to investigate the ostensibly suspicious online lover of an acquaintance. It seems simple enough. At first. But when people start dying and the victims are increasingly closer to home, it becomes clear that a vicious killer is at work. And the final targets may be Matt and Elaine Scudder.

Excerpt: David Blunkett (born 6 June 1947) is a British Labour politician, who was the Member of Parliament for Sheffield Brightside from 1987 to 2010, when the seat was renamed Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough. Blind since birth, and coming from a poor family in one of Sheffield’s most deprived districts, he rose to become Education Secretary in Tony Blair’s first Cabinet following Labour’s victory in the 1997 general election. He gave up this position to become Home Secretary following the 2001 general election, a position he held until 2004, when he was forced to resign following the revelation of an affair Blunkett was having while serving as Home Secretary. Following the 2005 general election, he was appointed Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, but was again forced to resign later that year following the release of a series of reports about his external business interests during his brief time outside the cabinet. Born in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, Blunkett grew up in an underprivileged family and in 1959, he endured a family tragedy when his father was gravely injured in an industrial accident in which he fell into a vat of boiling water while at work as a foreman for the East Midlands Gas Board and died a month later. This left the surviving family in poverty, especially since the board refused to pay compensation for two years because he was working past retirement age (67). Blind since birth, and educated at schools for the blind in Sheffield and Shrewsbury, Blunkett’s chances in life seemed limited. Following his father’s death, he was sent on assessment to the School for the Blind in Worcester (New College Worcester), where he failed to gain entry. His failed assessment is said to be partly deliberate, due to his rebe… More:

Hill was born 1916 in Lipscomb, Alabama, one of ten siblings. The family later moved to Marietta, Georgia, and her mother later left her to take care of other children. At the age of 17, Hill moved to Chicago, allegedly to work as a prostitute at the 1933 World’s Fair and later became a waitress. During this time, she met a mobster named Joseph Epstein, a ranking associate of Chicago Outfit political corrupter Jake Guzik. Hill allegedly became Epstein’s mistress, party hostess, and a co-conspirator in his bookmaking ring. In the process she became a close associate of several high-ranking Outfit mobsters. She was eventually the mistress of Frank Costello, Frank Nitti, Charles Fischetti, Major A. Riddle and Joe Adonis. She also became a “bag woman,” and funneled Outfit funds into Swiss bank accounts. She later denied it, but it is known that she bought a new home for her family in Marietta for $10,000 – in cash. In the 1940s, Hill moved to California, met Benjamin Siegel, and, in turn, became his most steady mistress. They reputedly fought as much as they made love, but Siegel did not stop his womanizing. There are rumors that they were secretly married in Mexico but Siegel never divorced his wife, Esta. Siegel’s nickname for Hill was “The Flamingo,” reputedly for her long legs. Hill maintained a lavish lifestyle also in Hollywood, bought her own mansion in Beverly Hills and entertained Hollywood celebrities there. Hill reportedly blackmailed several Hollywood celebrities with information about their private vices. Si… More:

Excerpt: Martin Buber (Hebrew: ; February 8, 1878 June 13, 1965) was an Austrian-born Jewish philosopher best known for his philosophy of dialogue, a form of religious existentialism centered on the distinction between the I-Thou relationship and the I-It relationship. Born in Vienna, Buber came from a family of observant Jews, but broke with Jewish custom to pursue secular studies in philosophy. In 1902, Buber became the editor of the weekly Die Welt, the central organ of the Zionist movement, although he later withdrew from organizational work in Zionism. In 1923 Buber wrote his famous essay on existence, Ich und Du (later translated into English as I and Thou), and in 1925 he began translating the Hebrew Bible into the German language. In 1930 Buber became an honorary professor at the University of Frankfurt am Main, and resigned in protest from his professorship immediately after Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933. He then founded the Central Office for Jewish Adult Education, which became an increasingly important body as the German government forbade Jews to attend public education. In 1938, Buber left Germany and settled in Jerusalem, in the British Mandate for Palestine, receiving a professorship at Hebrew University and lecturing in anthropology and introductory sociology. Buber’s wife Paula died in 1958, and he died at his home in the Talbiyeh neighborhood of Jerusalem on June 13, 1965. Martin (Hebrew name: , Mordechai) Buber was born in Vienna to an Orthodox Jewish family. His grandfather, Solomon Buber, in whose house in Lemberg (now Lviv, Ukraine) Buber spent much of his childhood, was a renowned scholar of Midrash and Rabbinic Literature. At home Buber spoke Yiddish and German. In 1892, Buber returned to his father’s house in Lemberg. A … More:

With William Butler Yeats and others, she co-founded the Irish Literary Theatre and the Abbey Theatre , and wrote numerous short works for both companies. Lady Gregory produced a number of books of retellings of stories taken from Irish mythology . Born into a class that identified closely with British rule, her conversion to cultural nationalism, as evidenced by her writings, was emblematic of many of the political struggles to occur in Ireland during her lifetime. Lady Gregory is mainly remembered for her work behind the Irish Literary Revival . Her home at Coole Park , County Galway , served as an important meeting place for leading Revival figures, and her early work as a member of the board of the Abbey was at least as important for the theatre’s development as her creative writings. Lady Gregory’s motto was taken from Aristotle : “To think like a wise man, but to express oneself like the common people.” Early life and marriage Lady Gregory was born the youngest daughter of the Anglo-Irish landlord family Persse in Roxborough , County Galway . Her mother, Frances Barry, was related to Standish Hayes O’Grady, 1st Viscount Guillamore , and her family home, Roxborough, was a 6,000-acre (24 km²) estate, the big house of which was later burnt down during the Irish Civil War . She was educated at home, and her future career was strongly influenced by the

Harvey S. Wiener shows how parents can encourage their children to write with a home program that can be used from preschool through high school. Beginning with the building of attitudes, Wiener moves through simple, varied and practical experience with the written word. By setting up an atmosphere in the home that encourages creative written expression, coupled with a parent’s guidance in writing, children gain an outlook on writing that builds confidence in their abilities to use language. This new edition addresses many heated issues about children’s education and touches on today’s critical debates: parents’ roles in school preparations, the increased stress on writing assessment and performance measures throughout a child’s education and across school sectors, and the debate over phonics. A revised and expanded section called “Key Books for Young Writers and Their Parents” will help any family stock its shelves with useful books for a home writing program. A new chapter discusses the ubiquity of home computers and word processing programs and assesses their positive and negative influences on children’s home learning experiences. In addition, Wiener describes how to find the best educational online resources and how to supervise a child’s work on the Internet. Furthermore, he emphasizes the importance of collaboration–child and parent, child and sibling–to help avoid computer abuse and establish good computer practices. Finally, he integrates discussion on computers through the text, and also offers writing exercises and samples for children to obtain from Oxford’s website.

Chapters: Art Galleries in New York City, Associated American Artists, Chambers Fine Art, Yvon Lambert Gallery, Zabriskie Gallery, Rochester Contemporary Art Center, Big Orbit Gallery, Elaine Benson Gallery. Excerpt: Associated American Artists is an art gallery and business established in 1934 in New York City. The gallery marketed art to the middle classes, first in the form of affordable prints and later in home furnishings and accessories, and played a significant role in the growth of art as an industry. Associated American Artists was begun by Reeves Lewenthal. Lewenthal’s first job was as a reporter for the Chicago Tribune but he quickly expanded into artists’ agent, working as a publicist for British artist Douglas Chandor. By the 1930s Lewenthal had a clientele of 35 groups including the National Academy of Design and the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design. Realizing the limited possibilities in selling high-priced art to high-class dealers, and the correspondingly huge potential in marketing affordable art to the much-larger middle classes, he left his public relations work to try his hand at this new business model. Prints being relatively cheap to produce, Lewenthal decided to focus on that medium. Before the 1930s, fine-art prints were usually limited editions which sold for $10-$50. During the Great Depression the Federal Art Project had resulted in hundreds of thousands of prints, but these were distributed free (mostly to schools) thus the artists made nothing. Lewenthal’s idea was to combine quality, affordability, and profit. In 1934 he met with several well-known American artists, including Thomas Hart Benton, and proposed hiring them to produce etchings which he would then sell to middle-class buyers for $5 apiece plus $2 per frame, … More:

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Arthur Edward Pearse Brome Weigall (1880-1934) was an English Egyptologist, stage designer, journalist and author whose works span the whole range from histories of Ancient Egypt through historical biographies, guide-books, popular novels, screenplays and lyrics.Arthur Weigall was born in the year in which his father, an army officer, died on the North West Frontier. As a young widow, his mother turned missionary in the inner-city slums of late-Victorian England. So Arthur Weigall went from an unconventional home life in Salford to Wellington College, a school with strong establishment and military connections. He started work as an apprentice clerk in the City of London, but a youthful fascination with genealogy led him to the pharaohs of Ancient Egypt and so into Egyptology. A mysterious patroness encouraged him to apply for New College, Oxford. This was a mistake (Egyptology was not yet studied at Oxford) so he went on to Leipzig, and on his return to England found work with Flinders Petrie, first at University College London and then at Abydos in Egypt.
