Aerotropolis: The Way We'll Live Next

Aerotropolis: The Way We’ll Live Next

$14.99

This brilliant and eye-opening look at the new phenomenon called the aerotropolis gives us a glimpse of the way we will live in the near future—and the way we will do business too.  Not so long ago, airports were built near cities, and roads connected the one to the other. This pattern—the city in the center, the airport on the periphery— shaped life in the twentieth century, from the central city to exurban sprawl. Today, the ubiquity of jet travel, round-the-clock workdays, overnight shipping, and global business networks has turned the pattern inside out. Soon the airport will be at the center and the city will be built around it, the better to keep workers, suppliers, executives, and goods in touch with the global market. This is the aerotropolis: a combination of giant airport, planned city, shipping facility, and business hub. The aerotropolis approach to urban living is now reshaping life in Seoul and Amsterdam, in China and India, in Dallas and Washington, D.C. The aerotropolis is the frontier of the next phase of globalization, whether we like it or not. John D. Kasarda defined the term “aerotropolis,” and he is now sought after worldwide as an adviser. Working with Kasarda’s ideas and research, the gifted journalist Greg Lindsay gives us a vivid, at times disquieting look at these instant cities in the making, the challenges they present to our environment and our usual ways of life, and the opportunities they offer to those who can exploit them creatively. Aerotropolis is news from the near future—news we urgently need if we are to understand the changing world and our place in it.

Yet because of its image as a “soft” or frivolous industry, some politicians and development professionals question whether the handcraft sector is worthy of investment. An opposing view holds that the creation of sustainable employment opportunities for poor people and a positive alternative to mass production outweighs the costs. Until now, the debate has been hampered by a lack of industry data. The apparel group MarketPlace: Handwork of India serves as the perfect case study to provide this missing information. Like many fair trade companies, it has dual goals: to generate income in the global marketplace and foster the empowerment of the low-income workers who run and staff the business. Bread and the Ballot: The United States and India’s Economic Development, 1947-1963

$40

In the 1940s, the name Henry J. Kaiser was magic. Based on the success of his shipyards, Kaiser was hailed by the national media as the force behind a ‘can-do’ production miracle and credited by the American public with doing more to help President Roosevelt win World War II than any other civilian. Kaiser also built an empire in construction, cement, magnesium, steel, and aluminum–all based on government contracts, government loans, and changes in government regulations. In this book, Stephen Adams offers Kaiser’s story as the first detailed case study of ‘government entrepreneurship.’ Taking a fresh look at the birth of modern business-government relations, he explores the symbiotic connection forged between FDR and Kaiser. Adams shows that while Kaiser capitalized on opportunities provided by the growth of the federal government, FDR found in Kaiser an industrial partner whose enterprises embodied New Deal goals. The result of a confluence of administration policy and entrepreneurial zeal, Kaiser’s dramatic rise illustrates the important role of governmental relations in American entrepreneurial success.

Business Education In Emerging Market Economies

Business Education in Emerging Market Economies discusses the impact of business education on emerging markets and explores curricular innovation, pedagogical approaches, and strategic alliances in the context of industrializing economies. Emerging markets consist of eighty percent of the world’s population and some 75% of its trade growth in the foreseeable future according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. The potential economic growth of emerging markets has prompted a need to understand the dynamics of these markets, their business institutions, and their educational systems. Many universities in the United States of America, for example, have responded to the demand of their students and business constituents to educate them about these exciting opportunities and lurking threats in these industrializing economies. This book contains multiple chapters describing curricular innovations and course development designed to educate American students about emerging markets. The pressures of globalization and the recent economic reforms that swept across emerging, developing, and transitioning, economies have had a positive impact on the demand for business education and business knowledge from the developed and industrialized countries. As a result, many methods were developed to transfer know-how from the developed markets including learning through imitation, using western style pedagogical approaches, attending universities in industrialized countries, learning through experience and practice, and using information technology. Aside from chapters on the aforementioned topics, this book also provides country- and region-specific insight into China, Russia, India, Ukraine, Latin America, Brazil, Argentina, South Africa, Arab Middle East and North Africa, and Vietnam. India”s business environment has improved considerably after the initiation of economic reforms in early 1990s. Domestic and foreign investors are finding it easier to do business after the reforms, which are aimed at reorientation of the centrally-controlled economy to a market-oriented one in order to foster greater efficiency and growth. This is being done by introducing greater competition in the economy through progressive internal deregulation accompanied by foreign direct investment and trade liberalization. However, the turmoil which surfaced in the US financial system has also adversely hit the Indian economy. Compared to other emerging economies, India has several strengths that can help mitigate the adverse effects of the global economic crisis. In spite of the global meltdown, Indian economy offers ample opportunities for business, both to the domestic and foreign entrepreneurs. Developing Tomorrow's Leaders Today: Insights from Corporate India

Developing Tomorrow’s Leaders Today: Insights from Corporate India

$34.95

There is a pressing need for qualified leaders in the many Indian businesses which are rapidly going global. But can leadership talent be developed as quickly as it is needed? This book proposes that a leader development curriculum can accelerate the maturation of leadership talent at all levels of an organization. But the “curriculum” does not have to be pursued only in classrooms and through educational programs and training. Work experiences, not coursework, present the foremost learning opportunity for managers aiming to become effective leaders. The critical questions are: Which experiences matter? How can learning from these experiences be maximized? This book will assist managers at all stages of their career to understand the fundamentals of how business leaders develop. Early and mid-life managers need a roadmap to steer their careers towards the echelons of executive leadership. Senior managers need to know how to cultivate leadership talent among entry and mid-level managers. This content will speak to all managers at a time when many must navigate through the fiery potential of explosive business growth and the dampening impact of world-wide financial turmoil. Young managers launching their careers today realize that the work climate for Indian professionals has changed dramatically. Just a decade ago, graduates from the best universities and colleges wanted steady life-time employment, for example, in well-known Indian companies, the government, or in the practice of medicine or law. Or they left India to pursue life-long lucrative appointments in foreign countries. This is no longer true. Career advancement is now the name of the game. College graduates and early-career professionals expect to change jobs and locations every few years. Career paths are becoming less linear and predictable because work opportunities in various sectors both within and outside India are proliferating. This generation of managers is learning that they must

Factor Five: The Promise of Resource Productivity

Factor Five: The Promise of Resource Productivity

$39.95

When first published in 1997, Factor Four: Doubling Wealth, Halving Resource Use by renowned economic and engineering experts Ernst von Weizscker, Amory Lovins and L. Hunter Lovins, transformed how economists, policy makers, engineers, entrepreneurs and business leaders thought about innovation and wealth creation. Through examples from a wide range of industrial sectors, the authors demonstrated how technical innovation could cut resource use in half while doubling wealth. Now twelve years on, with climate change at the top of the world agenda and the new economic giants of China and India needing ever more resources, there is a unique historic opportunity to scale up resources productivity and radically transform the global economy. And Factor Five is the book set to change all of this. Picking up where Factor Four left off, this new book examines the past 15 years of innovation in industry, technical innovation and policy. It shows how and where factor four gains have been made and how we can achieve greater factor five or 80%+ improvements in resource and energy productivity and how to roll them out on a global scale to retool our economic system, massively boost wealth for billions of people around the world and help solve the climate change crises. Spanning dozens of countries including China and India and examining innumerable cases of innovation in design, technology and policy, the authors leave no engineering and economic stone unturned in their quest for excellence. The book tackles sustainable development and climate change by providing in depth Factor 5 resource productivity studies of the following sectors: Buildings, Industry, Agriculture, Food and Hospitality, and Transportation. In its systematic approach to demonstrating how Factor 5 can be achieved, the book also provides an overview of energy/water nexus and energy/materials nexus efficiency opportunities across these sectors. Given that these sectors are responsible for

 Food For Thought

Food For Thought

This book is an attempt to understand changes in the macro policy environment of organisations dealing with agriculture and agribusiness activities in South Asia. The main proposition of this study is that on account of limited opportunities for global agricultural trade in the pre-WTO period, and the ‘autarkic’ agricultural policy followed by most countries in South Asia. The main emphasis of ‘development plans’ was on self-sufficiency in agriculture, national food security and adequate availability of food through the Public Distribution System. Strengthening the export competitiveness of agriculture in the regional or global market was not a conscious strategy. However, this paradigm of national protection and self-sufficiency has been completely reversed by the provisions of the WTO, which has opened new opportunities for trade liberalisation. South Asia has to respond to the challenges of the WTO, and in this process, latent business opportunities within the region will come to the fore. This study suggests that agribusiness organisations in the region must anticipate these changes and prepare themselves for the coming years. It points out that while state supported agribusiness organisations will be adversely affected on account of the liberalisation manifesto which most South Asian nations have adopted, other forms of agribusiness organisations, especially co-operatives and private enterprises will get the opportunity to flourish.Sanjeev Chopra (born 1961) studied Literature and History at Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar and Jawahar Lal Nehru University New Delhi. The world’s second-largest forgings-maker comes from India; the biggest Nordic insurer was bought by a South African competitor; a Mexican company reinvented the global cement business; and Brazilian restaurant chains sponsor immigration visas for highly-skilled meat carvers to support their American expansions. Understanding these trends and their implications is a priority for academics, policy-makers and business professionals alike. Do these developments vindicate the view that globalization opens up unprecedented opportunities for the South to catch up with the North? Are these “emerging MNCs” any different from their competitors from industrial countries? Does private sector direct engagement herald a new era for South-South cooperation? As this book shows, emerging MNCs must be analyzed in the context of the global political economy.

Partition and Locality: Violence, Migration, and Development in Gujranwala and Sialkot 1947-1961

$28.96

Partition and Locality provides original and challenging insights into the processes of violence, demographic transformation and physical reconstruction arising from the partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947. The focus is upon the cities of Gujranwala and Sialkot that experienced violence, demographic shift and economic transformation in different ways. The work is not only a significant contribution to the understanding of the partition process of British India and its aftermath for the Pakistan Punjab, it also provide an authoritative and thought provoking approach to the themes of broader twentieth-century processes of collective violence, mass displacements and economic recovery. Drawing together fresh information from an array of unexploited sources, Partition and Locality not only questions wider interpretations of the patterns of partition violence, it also adds considerable evidential weight to the argument that partition violence cannot simply be dismissed as ‘temporary madness’ or aberration. The analysis goes beyond consideration of the violence in relation to its spontaneity and organizational character to represent an important contribution to knowledge by uncovering for the first time actual perpetrators of the violence in the region. While Partition brought sufferings for many and disrupted old social, commercial and kin networks, the author concentrates particularly on new opportunities for both locals and refugees in different sectors of the economy arising from the migration of Hindu and Sikh business classes. The work highlights how the massive shifts in population influenced and transformed the socio-economic landscape of the two cities. The focus is upon the cities’ post-independence industrial recovery and the emergence of a new artisan-industrial class to prominence.

 Smart Alliances

Smart Alliances

In the old days-the 1980s-a company that lacked a competitive capability could either develop it internally or gain it via acquisition. Today, the speed of business has accelerated to such a rate that companies no longer have the time to secure such crucial capabilities using either of those methods. The solution? Alliances. And yet, surveys of CEOs show that the lack of know-how for forming lasting alliances is one of the biggest gaps in business knowledge. Even in companies with successful experiences, the learning often fails to filter down past the senior level. In 1988, Booz**Allen & Hamilton, one of the top management consulting firms in the world, became aware of the problem. Since then, the firm has become renowned for gathering the best thinking on alliance building from companies in every major industry around the globe. Now, in Smart Alliances, two of Booz**Allen’s senior consultants distill that knowledge into an eight-step plan for building and sustaining strategic alliances at every level of the company. From identifying opportunities to mapping objectives to planning and implementing compatible partnerships, they share the secrets of how alliances can be used to take a company global-through the success stories of corporate legAnds like Corning, Ford, and Hewlett-Packard in regions as diverse as Europe, Japan, and India. But authors Harbison and Pekar go far beyond the anecdotal. Using firsthand experience, in-depth interviews, and a wealth of collective research on more than 6,000 international alliances, they put hard numbers to this increasingly vital strategic skill. Their best practices can help companies jump the learning curve and form the kind of sustained partnerships that make for repeatable success.

Standing on the Sun: How the Explosion of Capitalism Abroad Will Change Business Everywhere

$27.95

For half a century the US has sat at the center of the global economic system, and Western-style capitalism has dominated. Now, it’s no secret that the center of gravity is shifting. The advanced economies that in 2000 consumed 75% of the world’s output will, by 2050, consume just 32%. Meanwhile, the emerging economies of the world–Brazil, India, China, and others–will surge forward. As these fast-growing, low-income economies mature, will they adopt the practices of the old guard? Or will they make their own way, and create the next prevailing version of capitalism? What new opportunities will that create for firms around the world?Standing on the Sun tackles these questions with fresh ideas and provocative examples. Based on firsthand observations of companies defying capitalism’s old rules yet prospering, the authors outline new principles for commercial success. Among them:• The obsession with return on equity gives way to more broad-based measurements of success.• Adam Smith’s invisible hand of the market is redeemed by the “invisible handshake” of collaborative networks. • Businesses take ownership of the impacts they now call “externalities.”Those who need to understand the emerging shape of global capitalism will benefit from Standing on the Sun.

The New Argonauts: Regional Advantage in a Global Economy

The New Argonauts: Regional Advantage in a Global Economy

$22.5

Like the Greeks who sailed with Jason in search of the Golden Fleece, the new Argonauts—foreign-born, technically skilled entrepreneurs who travel back and forth between Silicon Valley and their home countries—seek their fortune in distant lands by launching companies far from established centers of skill and technology. Their story illuminates profound transformations in the global economy.Economic geographer AnnaLee Saxenian has followed this transformation, exploring one of its great paradoxes: how the “brain drain” has become “brain circulation,” a powerful economic force for development of formerly peripheral regions. The new Argonauts—armed with Silicon Valley experience and relationships and the ability to operate in two countries simultaneously—quickly identify market opportunities, locate foreign partners, and manage cross-border business operations. The New Argonauts extends Saxenian’s pioneering research into the dynamics of competition in Silicon Valley. The book brings a fresh perspective to the way that technology entrepreneurs build regional advantage in order to compete in global markets. Scholars, policymakers, and business leaders will benefit from Saxenian’s firsthand research into the investors and entrepreneurs who return home to start new companies while remaining tied to powerful economic and professional communities in the United States. For Americans accustomed to unchallenged economic domination, the fast-growing capabilities of China and India may seem threatening. But as Saxenian convincingly displays in this pathbreaking book, the Argonauts have made America richer, not poorer.
