Films Set In Cleveland, Ohio (Study Guide) $14.14 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Stranger Than Paradise, Howard the Duck, Major League, Major League Ii, the Rocker, the Soloist, Welcome to Collinwood, American Splendor, the Fortune Cookie, Light of Day, Antwone Fisher, Against the Ropes, the Oh in Ohio, the Kid From Cleveland. Excerpt: Against the Ropes Against the Ropes is a 2004 drama movie . It was directed by Charles S. Dutton , in his motion-picture directorial debut. It is a fictionalized account of the American boxing manager Jackie Kallen , who was the first woman to become a success in the sport. Luther Shaw most likely represents James Toney , a boxer whom Kallen managed to a title despite a rocky relationship. Against the Ropes grossed less than $6 million in the US and was panned by critics, in part because of the resemblance to nearly all the other boxing movies, such as the Rocky series. As with other such movies, its climax is a bout for the championship. The film was shot primarily in Hamilton, Ontario , Canada at the Copps Coliseum . Plot The film begins with Jackie learning the boxing game with her father and uncle in a small gym when she is just a small girl. Later, she becomes the assistant to a Cleveland boxing promoter. Jackie’s boss then begins doing business with Sam LaRocca, a sports manager, during a middleweight championship fight. After the fight, LaRocca asks Jackie what she thought of the fight. Obviously unimpressed with Jackie’s knowledge of boxing, LaRocca offers her the fight’s loser’s contract for a dollar. She goes to visit the fighter at home, only to find him addicted to drugs. Enter Luther Shaw, a small time hood, based partly on James Toney . Kallen watches in mixed horror and fascination as Shaw pummels the former middleweight champ. She offers to manage him professionally. Although Shaw is at first hesitant, |

Excerpt: All Dogs Go to Heaven is a 1989 animated film directed and produced by Don Bluth and released by United Artists. Set in 1939, the film tells the story of two dogs, Charlie B. Barkin (voiced by Burt Reynolds)and his loyal best friend Itchy Itchiford (voiced by Dom DeLuise). Charlie, who is murdered by his gangster business partner Carface Crothers, forsakes his place in Heaven to return and take revenge. On his return he frees a young orphan girl, Anne-Marie, who Carface was holding captive because of her ability to talk to and understand animals (giving Carface insider information about whom to bet on in races). At first Charlie and Itchy intend on exploiting Anne-Marie’s gift too, but they soon become attached to her and act as her protectors. Charlie learns that he will have to change his ways in order to get back into Heaven. The film was produced at Sullivan Bluth Studios in Dublin, Ireland, funded by UK-based investors Goldcrest Films. On its cinema release it competed directly with an animated feature released at the same time, The Little Mermaid produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation. While it did not repeat the box-office success of Sullivan Bluth’s previous feature films (An American Tail and The Land Before Time) it was very successful on home video, becoming one of the biggest-selling VHS releases ever. The film inspired a theatrical sequel, a television series and a holiday direct-to-video film. It has since then become a cult film and classic. In 1939, New Orleans, Charlie B. All the Flowers Are Dying $7.99 In his sixteenth Matthew Scudder novel, All the Flowers Are Dying, New York Times bestselling author Lawrence Block takes the award-winning series to a new level of suspense and a new depth of characterization. A man in a Virginia prison awaits execution for three hideous murders he swears — in the face of irrefutable evidence — he did not commit. A psychologist, who claims to believe the convict, spends hours with the man in his death row cell, and ultimately watches in the gallery as the lethal injection is administered. His work completed, the psychologist heads back to New York City to attend to unfinished business. Meanwhile, Scudder has just agreed to investigate the ostensibly suspicious online lover of an acquaintance. It seems simple enough. At first. But when people start dying and the victims are increasingly closer to home, it becomes clear that a vicious killer is at work. And the final targets may be Matt and Elaine Scudder. |

Alumni of the Royal National College for the Blind: David Blunkett $9.05 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: David Blunkett (born 6 June 1947) is a British Labour politician, who was the Member of Parliament for Sheffield Brightside from 1987 to 2010, when the seat was renamed Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough. Blind since birth, and coming from a poor family in one of Sheffield’s most deprived districts, he rose to become Education Secretary in Tony Blair’s first Cabinet following Labour’s victory in the 1997 general election. He gave up this position to become Home Secretary following the 2001 general election, a position he held until 2004, when he was forced to resign following the revelation of an affair Blunkett was having while serving as Home Secretary. Following the 2005 general election, he was appointed Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, but was again forced to resign later that year following the release of a series of reports about his external business interests during his brief time outside the cabinet. Born in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, Blunkett grew up in an underprivileged family and in 1959, he endured a family tragedy when his father was gravely injured in an industrial accident in which he fell into a vat of boiling water while at work as a foreman for the East Midlands Gas Board and died a month later. This left the surviving family in poverty, especially since the board refused to pay compensation for two years because he was working past retirement age (67). Blind since birth, and educated at schools for the blind in Sheffield and Shrewsbury, Blunkett’s chances in life seemed limited. Following his father’s death, he was sent on assessment to the School for the Blind in Worcester (New College Worcester), where he failed to gain entry. His failed assessment is said to be partly deliberate, due to his rebe… More: |

Art Galleries in New York: Art Galleries in New York City, Associated American Artists, Chambers Fine Art, Yvon Lambert Gallery $8.78 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Art Galleries in New York City, Associated American Artists, Chambers Fine Art, Yvon Lambert Gallery, Zabriskie Gallery, Rochester Contemporary Art Center, Big Orbit Gallery, Elaine Benson Gallery. Excerpt: Associated American Artists is an art gallery and business established in 1934 in New York City. The gallery marketed art to the middle classes, first in the form of affordable prints and later in home furnishings and accessories, and played a significant role in the growth of art as an industry. Associated American Artists was begun by Reeves Lewenthal. Lewenthal’s first job was as a reporter for the Chicago Tribune but he quickly expanded into artists’ agent, working as a publicist for British artist Douglas Chandor. By the 1930s Lewenthal had a clientele of 35 groups including the National Academy of Design and the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design. Realizing the limited possibilities in selling high-priced art to high-class dealers, and the correspondingly huge potential in marketing affordable art to the much-larger middle classes, he left his public relations work to try his hand at this new business model. Prints being relatively cheap to produce, Lewenthal decided to focus on that medium. Before the 1930s, fine-art prints were usually limited editions which sold for $10-$50. During the Great Depression the Federal Art Project had resulted in hundreds of thousands of prints, but these were distributed free (mostly to schools) thus the artists made nothing. Lewenthal’s idea was to combine quality, affordability, and profit. In 1934 he met with several well-known American artists, including Thomas Hart Benton, and proposed hiring them to produce etchings which he would then sell to middle-class buyers for $5 apiece plus $2 per frame, … More: |

Chapters: Atari St, the One, Page 6, St Action, St/amiga Format, St Format, St Review, Atari St User, Start Magazine. Excerpt: The Atari ST is a home /personal computer that was released by Atari Corporation in 1985 and commercially available from that summer into the early 1990s. The “ST” officially stands for “Sixteen/Thirty-two”, which referred to the Motorola 68000 ‘s 16-bit external bus and 32-bit internals. Overview The Atari ST was part of the 16/32 bit generation of home computers , based on the Motorola 68000 CPU , with 512 KB of RAM or more, and 3½” double-sided double-density floppy disks as storage (nominally 720 KB). It was similar to other contemporary machines which used the Motorola 68000, the Apple Macintosh and the Commodore Amiga . Although the Macintosh was the first widely available computer with a graphical user interface (GUI), it was limited to a monochromatic display on a smaller built-in monitor. Preceding the Amiga’s commercial release by almost two months, the Atari ST was the first computer to come with a fully bit-mapped color GUI , using a version of Digital Research’s GEM released that February. It was also the first home computer with integrated MIDI support. The ST was primarily a competitor to the Apple Macintosh and the Commodore Amiga systems. This platform rivalry was often reflected by the owners and was most prominent in the Demo Scene . Where the Amiga had custom processors which gave it the edge in the games and video market, the ST was generally cheaper, had a slightly faster CPU, and had a high-resolution monochrome display mode, ideal for business and CAD . Thanks to its built-in MIDI ports it enjoyed success for running music-sequencer software and as a controller of musical instruments among amateurs and professionals alike, |

She married Gorton on 15 February 1935 at St Giles Church, Oxford, and after his studies were finished they returned to his father’s orchard near Kerang, Victoria.
